Anybody know what the formula is for determining what  you need to bowl to raise your average 1 pin ?

you must bowl as many pins above your average  as games bowled for the year.

If you bowled 90 games so far this year and averaged 100 and were bowling 3 games tonight you would need to bowl a 393 series to raise your average to 101

Heres a example that will tell you the minimum you need to raise your average 1 pin:
Say you have  96 games with total pins of 17983 for a 187 average now.

You want a 188 average after you bowl next time.

multipy a 188 average by 99 games to get total pins of 18612

Now subtract 17983 from 18612 =629

629 is the minimum series you need to shoot for a one pin increase 187--->188

Also ronsyl's example will work, but it might show more than you need. Using the 187-->188 as a example .
 187 x 3=561 your average series.

561+99gms=660 which is 31 more than the minimum.

(current total games bowled + 3) x (current average +1) - current total pins = minimum series to raise your average by 1 pin.

I made an excel sheet that's pretty cool for giving you a target score and what you need to bowl to get above or below that.

They don't put this on your league standing sheet?

A lot in the responses is true.  One thing to consider is that you probably have a partial pin above your written average on the league sheet.  So the league sheet might say you have a 188 average and it might actually be 188.5.  So you don't need a full set on 1 pin per game for all those games but only half that amount.  Divide the total scratch pins on the league sheet by the games bowled and this will show you if you have any average more then 188 but less then 189.

Its not too late for most leagues.
