Makes me wonder
« on: August 09, 2013, 02:49:32 PM »
Why do people put their names on bowling balls (especially odd nicknames) in this day and age, when they may possibly sell the ball at some point? I never really understood putting your name on a ball but now with so many balls being resold it just makes mess if you don't want that on there. It can be removed but it just seems ridiculous.

Because they can...

I'd wager that most people that really do make a habit of selling used stuff don't bother with custom engraving.

I keep seeing this person on one of the FB pages who offers customized engraving on bowling balls. When most balls get used for a year or two tops, is this really a needed service? Think not....Does this person think we all have trophy rooms to hold these engraved balls in? Just don't get it...

Unless I shot 900, every other ball is just a tool and I don't collect tools...

35+ years ago when there were probably only 3 makes of balls on the rack and they were all black it would help you identify your ball without putting your hand in it.

Today it would not be such a necessity.

I don't do it but I seldom sell a ball. I tend to use a ball for 2 or 3 years and it is pretty well used up.

But there are lots of things people do for personal style it don't understand in fashion, personal adornment, etc. But whatever floats your boat.

I haven't had my name (or anything else) put on a ball since I was 14 and it was still cool. I don't sell my bowling balls, but I still wouldn't put my name on one.

Pinbuster, your post is spot on. That is why people used to do it. I realize as J Mac says "because they can" , but it make them look like goofs and I'm more than sure, keeps the value of the ball less than it would be without.

"Back in the day", we didn't sell our bowling balls. Once it was purchased and drilled, it was "yours", and would probably last as long as you did.

That began to change in the early days of polyester balls, but you still used to see lots of those with names on them too. Soon after the advent of the urethane balls, people began to have them engraved less and less, as they started to get a new ball at MUCH shorter intervals than before. I knew a guy that had the Black, Gold, Grey, Blue, and Purple Angles. He always said he never knew he would use more balls in 2 years than his dad did in a lifetime.

Nowdays, balls are like toilet paper. Use it, get some crap on it, throw it away and get another. I don't think the shop here even has the old engraver we used to use.

My dad owned exactly ONE bowling ball in his life. I have 8 undrilled ones in my closet right now, and one I just drilled at the end of last fall league that doesn't have 25 games on it.

If you came to bowling in the last ten-twenty years, I can understand why engraving your name on your ball seems strange, but there was a time it was not all that weird.
