« on: April 01, 2004, 02:53:47 PM »
When the shot breaks down...What move do you prefer to make first?

1) Look further down the lane
2) Alter release
3) Change equipment
4) Move into the oil.
5) Other - please explain...

Four, then two.  Three only when necessary.

Def do #4 first...i find it more successful to move my feet and mark first...as opposed to just moving left...

Next is #3...i'll switch to a less aggressive ball, or one that goes further down the lane...

followed by #1, 2, Beer, and finally change speed.

5.  Other.

Remember that there are more ways to move than left-to-right.  When my shot breaks down, especially in a walled-up league, it is usually the carry that goes away due to carry down. I need a little more back-end to carry.  So, I move BACK on the approach, about 1/4 to 1/2 step or so, depending on how much more flip I need.

This isn't for everybody because it can mess with your timing.  But it works for me.  Side to side moves often cost me some of the area that the shot provides.

2.  Alter release or finger positions.
4.  Move into the oil.

My perception of looking farther down the lane is that it tightens up the line.  Seems like I keep the ball in the oil longer.  I just started trying this recently so dont have a  lot of experience doing it.

My personal experience is that the further down the lane I look, the further the ball will skid. The closer I look the earlier it will roll. The theory I've heard about why it happens is supposedly your eye hand coordination improves when you spot closer and you get more on the ball - but I can't vouch for that - I just know where I look does seem to influence when my ball rolls.
