help with making a video
« on: November 23, 2004, 06:33:11 PM »
I made a video back in April/May that wasn't very clear.  Why wasn't it clear?  I am an idiot when it comes to technology so please help me out.  It was my father-in-laws camera, I have no idea which brand or anything.

Does the megapixel of the camera matter??

Help

You want to record at about 350 frames per second and use as much light as possible.  this allows you to play back slowly.  The more light the less grainy the video will be.

Thanks for the replies.  The lighting was good but not great.  I haven't bought a digital camera but i was thinking of picking one up this holiday season.  Would something like a 3.2 megapixel, with 30 second video capability, be acceptable??

acceptable, yes, as long as there is good light. Good quality? Most likely not. Most digital cameras dont have good video quality, digital video cameras are the best for it. For your purposes though, just posting a vid(s), a digital camera would be fine. Its what I use.

Still digital cameras only capture at 320 x 240 when in video mode but a digital video camera is 720 x 480 and that is where the increase in quality comes from. I would rather have a digital video camera than a digital still camera. I have both but I could get by without my still because my vid takes 1 mega pixel stills which is enough for most things.
You could always just try and find someone that will let you use their dig. vid. cam. It is much easier/faster to work with when it comes time to put it on your computer because the processor doesn't have to turn it from analog to digital format.

Does Megapixel matter?
Not when it comes to video. (320x240/.76MP)

I have a Digital Video Camera, it is a Sony Hi-8.  I was reading throught the owners manual today.  I realized that I never received the USB cable, which was supposed to be provided, and the software I need.  Could I get a replacement USB cable at an electronics store??  I could probably download the software somewhere but who knows.  Please guys help me out on this..

Yes you can get a cable at almost any electronics store (Best Buy, Circuit City, etc).
Go to www.sony.com and see what they have available for download or email customer service.
I have a Sony also but I don't know if the software would be the same since mine is MiniDV format.

Scratch it all....my camcorder isn't digital.  I called Sony and talked to them.  So, I can't upload any of my videos to the computer.

What should I do from here????

You can use your video camera you just need a capture card.
Here is a good capture card at a reasonable price.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1072287783836&skuId=6282685&type=product&productCategoryId=cat01054&cmp=++

There is a $20 rebate offer right now on it ends 11/27.

Thanks, I called my friend that is a more technological advanced than I.  He said my computer is too slow to run a video card.  I only have a 1.0gb pentium 3, with windows 98, and 256mbs of RAM.

I appreciate the help though.

It is fast enough.
I use to do my editing/capturing on a 800Mhz Athlon and am only using a 1.6Ghz P4 now and I have no trouble at all. Trust me on this one, I build computers in my spare time with my brother in law who owns a computer business.

How big is the hard drive?
Video capture takes alot of space until you compress it to AVI, MPEG, .MOV, ETC.
.mov (QuickTime) seems to give the best quality to size ratio.

That will give you enough room as long as you don't try to capture more than 1 hour at a time. If I remember right it is about 10 GB per hour of HI8 video before you convert it to a compressed format.
