Free armswing
« on: May 07, 2010, 10:09:24 AM »
I've been working on freeing up my armswing for a while and I'm seeing some really good results. I still feel that there is more room for improvement. To free my armswing, I start with the setup of my approach by placing all of the weight of the ball in my left hand (I'm a righty). I transfer the weight of the ball to my right hand in my push away and at the top of my armswing I let gravity pull my arm down instead of muscle. I've noticed that I don't squeeze the ball at the bottom which gives me a clean release and smooth ball reaction in the back part of the lane. Overall, there seems to be less effort but like I said earlier, there is still room for improvement. Does anybody have input on little tricks that free the arm?

For me, what really helped me get my swing free was suring up my foot timing. If my feet get out of time I either feel like I need to speed up or slow down the ball. But when your timing is dead on you will be able to flow better.

i would say if u like doing it that way, watch norm duke coaching videos

btw, if u have free swing, then make sure u learn how to make speed adjustments with ur feet
--------------------
When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment

When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one.

I agree with the comments about foot speed and overall timing.
If your feet are ahead of your arm, there can be a tendency to muscle the ball in the downswing to catch up.  I've personally made a conscious decision to start my push away earlier and with a different reference point to get in sync.  That was because until my personal coach mentioned it, I thought my timing was OK, but my pushaway was actually a half step late causing me to muscle the ball.

If you haven't considered it, something even simpler is the right fit.  You want to have a good fit for your thumb and span.  This way, you don't have to grab the ball in any way and it just sits at the end of the pendulum comfortably and your release can be consistent.
