Help with Mechanics
« on: December 09, 2009, 12:58:25 AM »
Hello,

It has been a while since I have posted on it. I have had an issue in my mechanics ever since the day I started bowling. When I stand at the line I am straight and balanced, however, when I push the ball away instead of the ball going straight back in a pendelum movement for some reason  my elbow pushs out and this causes a huge wedge in between my arm and elbow. This in turn, causes me to release the ball improperly and not throw good shots. I really believe that this is the reason for my inconsistency (last week 149-127-221). I have been up and down bowler all my life and I really want to correct this problem.

Any Advice?

Tuck a towel in your arm pit.  The towel should stay in place until after the ball is released.  --  JohnP

Agreed with JohnP, that towel trick is a very good one. Also if you can get some video clips that you can share with us it would help greatly.

Hate to be overly simple since this isn't the beginner's section, but...

A common mistake I see is bowlers holding the ball at the start in the middle of their bodies.

If you do this then you are forced to swing it out like you describe in order to clear your legs.

So be sure that your setup position has your upper arm and forearm parallel with your target and swing plane.

Unless of course you walk left (for right handers) in the first two steps and the swing is actually remains straight under the shoulder (ie... Jason Couch).

The towel thing is a great tool to tell you when you are doing something correctly...but does nothing to help you change anything.

Here is a method that might help you..
1. Feel the weight of the ball in the swing pulling down on your shoulder. (this reduces muscling the swing which most commonly the problem with variant swings)
2. Push the ball toward your target.
3. Imagine a line through your target, to your break point and into the masking unit... that same line extends behind you ....swing the ball on this line both backward and forward... and through your follow through.
4. Attempt to have your shoulders aligned 90 degrees to your target line and parrallel to the approach.

Practicing these items will certianly help to hit what you are looking at. The towel in the armpit will let you know when you are doing those things above.
