Help with new ball for fiancee
« on: November 20, 2004, 02:39:46 AM »
My fiancee uses an older 13lb hammer.  The ball works fairly well for her, but she would like a newer ball and would like to get more hook.

She throws the ball slow to medium speed and doesn't get much rotation on the ball at all and the limited rotation she does get isn't necessarily along the natural rotation point of the ball.  At about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way down the lane, her current ball self aligns and starts to rotate properly.  At that point it starts to hook.  In oily conditions, this hook is fairly small.

For her to get more hook, I'm assuming she needs a ball with some sort of agressive weighting to get it rotating properly and something with a fair amount of grip.  I don't know a lot about picking balls, so I am asking for help.

Thanks,
Dave

Hi Dave.. Hey my sons fiancee rolls a Power Groove Reactive ball... rolls about the same.. 14mph + maybe, and she don't try and over rotate it.. she lets it flow off her hand and with a clean releace that she get's 90% of the time and hitting her marks.. it come nicely back into the pocket... I'm not the most experienced one here for sure by any means.. but I hope this will help you choose something for her

BTW, I haven't seen any horribly expensive bowling balls, so cost isn't too much of an issue.

Off topic, but being on the same team for league/tournament with your significant other = bad idea.

Anyway, Dave, several of the bowling ball companies have equipment that we call "mid-priced/mid-line" bowling balls. They still are capable of hooking and hitting just as hard as the "high performance/high price" bowling balls.

Examples of bowling balls that you can look into is/are the Storm "Flash" line, as well as Brunswick's Value Performance (BVP) line.

I dont mean to be rude to anyone here, but your all giving bad advice. Seriously dont give advice if you dont know what your talking about. As for what ball to get, different weighting like your saying wont do anything. Its the coverstock of the ball that will get it going in the right direction. Before you get her a new ball though, you may what to teach her to throw it correctly, and to get forward roll. As for a ball though, Brunswick power grooves are good, columbia reactive scouts are ok, tornados from ebonite are also ok, good balls to start with.

Oh and Im not sure what you mean by self aligning??? But I think you mean when the ball stops hooking and goes straight. Thats called rolling out, and thats because you dont have enough speed to get it down the lane before it loses its 'umph', and not enough revs to make it keep hooking. Theres really not much you can do about that if you throw slow.

I would HIGHLY NOT SUGGEST getting particle. People with low speed and low revs tend to have a VERY BAD TIME with particle. Not to mention they could be bowling on dry conditions, which that ball would die on. With the power grooves and such, they are much more versatile, and can be used on more conditions, from dry, to oily.

Im a 235 average bowler, and been around this game since 1962...OK...You betta get UR facts straight before bein a jerkoff. Second, have you tried carpenters tape? IT WORKs...

THird,I highly reccomend you go with a Super Carbide Bomb...It's the best ball for what you describe, if you use the carpenters tape that is.
First off, I dont care HOW long you've been BOWLING, that doesnt mean you know anything about it. Second, what you said about puting tape over the oil and stuff like that is illegal not to mention stupid. The only thing tape is good for is putting in your thumb hole, it does not change the way the ball rolls AT ALL. Simple as that.

I still don't understand the idea of carpenter's tape.  Are you saying the tape is placed on the flare rings so when the ball begins to flare and the tape comes in contact with the lane, the ball will hook more?

Its not a matter of how good I can bowl or what not, its the fact that what your telling people is plain and simple not allowed. Go break a hip or something.
