50 Foot TOC Pattern
« on: February 17, 2011, 05:31:03 AM »
A couple of my students are bowling a tournament using the 50 foot TOC pattern on Sunday and I was curious if you any of you had any experience with the pattern and could share your experiences.

Bowled it a couple times in a PBA experience league.  For me, it seemed like the easiest pattern once you got it broken down, and it wasn't necessarily difficult before that.  Then again, I've heard that it takes running a few lanes for the house shot program to truly get worked out of the lane machine, and the track at every house is different.  There are too many variables for me to give a definitive opinion, but at least if I can count on consistency of all the patterns being "off" about the same amount, whether easier or more difficult, the TOC pattern was still for me the easiest.  Longer pattern of course than Shark, but the volume of oil I don't believe is as high.  I didn't think it really felt like 50 feet long either, the ball didn't go as long as I was expecting it to.  You could definitely have some over/under issues if you tried to play too straight or too firm or both, unless you were playing right off the ditch.  I found the best shot for me was around 4th arrow.  The wet/dry line isn't sharp, and doesn't seem very defined.  If you miss left, the ball gradually hooks too much, if you miss right, the ball doesn't quite make it back.  Definitely not a shot to get firm on, staying soft and loose worked the best for me, just nice and easy.  Can't remember much more than that, it's been several years, and I don't believe I bowled on it more than twice.

I bowled on it back in dec????   yea it sucked......   how anyone can get the ball to hook is beyond me unless you had like 30mins to toss a 300grit ball down the lane....

I bowled 3 games, and honestly i think i got the ball to wrinkle maybe a couple times..     even bowled several games after the tournament and finally got the ball to move a bit more after about 6 or so games..

fyi,  I was using my Virtual Gravity, which is a awesome ball on the shark...

If you can be soft and roll the ball the pattern is pretty easy...if you snatch on it at the bottom or throw it hard you will have a long day.

I think Russell is probably correct in that in being soft and rolling the ball helps on this pattern.Or at least being matched up with speed and revs.

I'm slightly speed dominant, 275-300rpm@17.5mph. The couple times I've bowled on it I had to square up and play straight up 12-13 with my heavy oil stuff trying to keep the ball speed down. This worked for me the first couple of games but how they broke down by game 3 is what killed me. Everyone was playing the break point in the 11-13 board range and this part of the lane really blew up after two games. I was forced to move in further and go from my oiler all the way down to my dry condition ball, even medium oil stuff seemed to be too much after game 2. After the breakdown I was seeing a lot of wet/dry and over/under, I think my speed dominance probably contributed to not being able to get a good ball reaction after the breakdown. It wasn't uncommon for me to shoot sets like 210-210-160-580 on it.

It also seemed like outside of 10 was OB, no matter who you were and how you threw the ball. In that respect it seemed similar to Shark.

I totally agree... my ball speed/revs match however, I just returned to non-THS conditions last Dec. I just did not slow down or softened my hand enough in the beginning and my scores went up each 3 games in 50 pin increments. Really frustrating. Pretty much all the other accomplished Sport bowlers saw the below phenomonon though.

Thats the 50 foot shot at the Gate, which is just a challenge shot that John (lane guy) basically came up with, its not the TOC pattern... rather it is 50 feet of flat super heavy oil. The TOC pattern is known to be one of the highest scoring patterns they put out on tour.

The only two times i bowled on it I struggled because so many people were throwing the hookingest, dullest ball they have and they caused early hook in the track area and made the condition extremely difficult.

If the approach was taken that just getting up to the pocket by staying soft was taken i'm sure it could have been a lot easier, people need to understand that you need to get 9 on a pattern that long and flat, its not about shooting 270+.
