Help with tearing skin off a weird spot on my hand
« on: February 01, 2009, 10:39:58 AM »
I keep tearing my hand on my palm right below my pointer finger. What could I be doing to cause this(figuring its me) I tend to peal a layer of skin off after an hour or so of practice. Thank you for all your help.

YOu're obviously rubbing that part of your hand on the ball. Put a bandaid or piece of tape over that portion to protect it. There's lots of bowler's protection tape available these days.

Once you do that, find out why the ball is rubbing so much there. Usually people rest the ball on or where the index (pointer? ) finger meets the hand. Maybe you're not quite resting the ball on the right spot?

I have been told to use a glove or other method to protect but would rather fix the issue.

Some peoples skin is very soft. When you bowl you sweat and your skin becomes softer. The ball is very tacky and it is turning in your hand. The ball is stronger than your skin so it is your skin that gives. This is a common problem. There was a company out there that made a protector for that spot. The best fix is to use a tacky palm glove. No metal inserts or anything. Just a regular tacky palm.

It isn't anything you are doing wrong that causes it.

You would have to shorten your span to the point that the problem part of your palm doesn't touch the ball.

you could try and put some super glue on the area before you bowl, just make sure it dries 1st and keep your finger fully arched back while it dries. if nothing else it could protect the spot till you figure it out. just an idea.

Do you spread your index finger quite a bit???

Many years ago, I used to and I formed a callous on the same area you describe. Over the years I have stopped holding the ball in that manner and I no longer have that problem.

I have seen quite few people who tear up in that area. If you don't feel comfortable changing your hand position, go with the protection tape as an alternative.

Ah, alright thank you very much. I do sweat pretty easy which is the reason I wear shorts and a t shirt through the harsh Michigan winters. I guess Ill try fixing one of my older golf gloves up to work.

If you don't want to use the glove, you could always just do what baseball players do....
