Congrats, but let's get real here
« on: February 07, 2004, 02:08:12 AM »
Hey everyone,

After reading that the Brunswick website mentions a 10-year old bowling a 300, I decided to go there and check it out. It states that this kid's "older opponent" (though it doesn't specify how much older) had already posted 279 before this youngster stepped up and went off of the sheet for his 300. Now, I'm not trying to take anything away from either one of these kids, because these are great numbers no matter what. But is anyone else wondering what kind of shot must have been out there to allow 2 youths, one throwing a 13lb Bruiser with 2 hands, to go 300-279? Again, these are great scores and these kids should get their due, but for Christ's sake, what kind of funnel were we likely looking at here?

Does it matter what kind of shot is out there????

It's a ten yr old kid, I dont think he will be challenging you anytime soon, so how about saying great job kid, I'm proud of ya, not wondering about oils, or layouts, or what he was throwing. HES 10!!!!

Good point No1......granted he probably had a couple brooks in there.  But, overall, he had to have some clue.  Back when I was in YABA (10-15 years ago), there was a little 8 year old boy at that time avergaing 175ish.  Resin was only a thought back then.  I think that kids nowadays get better faster than years ago.  Period.  I sat here and watched a golf tournament of 10 and 12 year olds not too long ago on the Golf Channel.  You would have been amazed at these kids firing at pins from 140 yards out, sticking the ball to within 5 to 10 feet of the hole.  My father could not even believe it.  If that was your son or daughter, would you have laughed it off, or have been proud of what they accomplished?  Make you think a little.

no1bucsfan,

How about reading all of what I said, instead of just telling me how I should feel about it? I clearly said "I'm not trying to take anything away from either of those kids, because those are great numbers no what." I guess that statement was not enough to show you that I am impressed by what they were able to accomplish. In that case, I'll you use your words, great job kid, way to go. Are you happy now?

I would say "nice technology kid."    I started bowling when I was 10 and I am certain that my orange lucky strike ball didn't hit as hard as a Bruiser.  I did ,however, shoot 300 with a Black Angle five years later.

I don't even wear my 300 ring anymore.  If I get a Sport Bowling award, I will wear that. At the present, it is more likely that I will be struck by lightning than EARN an honor score in my Sport League.

Sport leagues are where its at...now we all have something that we know is a credible acheivement. If anybody shoots well in a sport league thats when I'll say nice job.

Yes I'm happy now, I know you said not trying to take away but then you said BUT, and it took away. that was my point.

Uhh, repeat the shot.  Let's see two handed flinger.  Does consistency mean keeping on the lane?

My last year in junior leagues I had the pleasure of bowling against a very talented 11 year old.  His name is Brian Himmler.  Brian could buzz the crap out of  a blue roto.  For youngsters like AllStar23 that is what you use as a spare ball today.

If the 2 handed wonder wins some big cash in the megabucks as a 16 year old and has a couple of title to his credit then I will be happy to say the 10 year old "repeats shots."

But on a wall, even shots that are not the same still come back in, you can miss by anywhere from 1 to 5+ boards on a wall and still strike. (just arguing to stir the pot)

Even if the kids were using bumpers and the bumpers were set up on the 10R and 10L boards instead of along the gutter, that doesn't guarantee a 300.  The ball still must be put in the right place.

I understand what Gene is saying.  Kids, great job on the 300 and 279!  Forget about a possible funnel ... what are the odds that two youngsters would accomplish two such great scores on the same day?  What are the odds that any one of us and one of our teammates would shoot 300 and 279 on the same day?  Better, but still not common.
