Can someone explain what was happening here.
« on: May 31, 2005, 06:16:27 AM »
The house I bowl in would oil there lanes 5 to 6 hours before they opened and are league started.  The shot was terrible, no backend at all; extremely dry from 5-8.  When they oiled right before we started I would shoot 650 plus, nice backends, it seemed like a great shot.  I struggled with this and do not understand why this happens.  I do not think the weather had much effect, because it was pretty mild the last 3 months I bowled.  The owner is in the process of putting new lanes in over top the old ones and I noticed there was a ton of sanding on the old ones, I am assuming to level them out.  So I am wondering, does the oil break down lying there?  Did it move?  If anyone can explain this, I would appreciate it. They were using prodigy oil.

If no one was really bowling on them prior, I would guess that the days you noticed good backend they were stripping the lanes, rather than oiling over the top.

My only hunch would be that on the days you mentioned no backends, they just reoilied on top of the broken down shot, which had carrydown from prior bowling and then more as time went on. (killing the backends)  When they stripped and oiled them, even though the shot was fresh, the dry backends gave you good recovery.

I can only go by what the owner says.  He says his machine is set up to always strip the lanes.  The alleys do not open until the start of our league, so no one was bowling on them prior to our league.  Out of our 32 week season they oiled right before we bowled about 8 or 10 times, and it was the only time the shot was really nice.

not to hijack the thread, but how do you know if the house is stripping the lanes?

Is that something they do in the mornings, or when they oil the lanes?  Is there a set schedule they have to use for stipping the lanes (ie: daily, once a week, once a month, etc)?

I've seen my house oil the lanes before leagues and the machine doesn't go all the way down to the pins.  I would guess that means they are just laying down the oil pattern.

I remember when I was younger (pre high school days) I would spend most of my summer days in the local alley.  I would see them clean/oil the lanes every day.  I seem to remember the oil machine would go all the way down the lanes.

Again anytime I have seen them oil the machine knocks down the pins.  The owner says he always strips, but maybe he doesn't when no one is there to watch him, I would think that would save him a little bit of money.  It would be the best explanation I could come up with.

Bob, sorry I didn't explain better; the season is over and they just started working to put the new lanes in.  I was in the other day looking at the progress.

Sorry I do not understand the open play statement.  No one bowls on the lanes before leagues, our league starts at 4:00 and he opens at 3:30.
