Here is my vid
« on: October 24, 2004, 05:23:08 PM »
Ok guys help me get better.

If you look closely you can see me popping up after my ball is released I'm working on staying down but if I get lazy I start popping up again.

On edit: You get to the line too early, your elbow is bent throughout the semi-muscled backswing, you drift alot, and you come up at the line. (that's the stuff I see right now. I'll look more in depth tomorrow when I can see it).

The drift to me isn't that bad. You do drift but you slide right and end up almost where you were standing and your toe is facing to the right.. which is good in my books. A bent elbow may cause some pain later on. I had that problem and i was bowling so much and with that elbow bent it started hurting a ton.

Edit: Things that must be fixed; Push away (Where is it? more like a bombs away), backswing (Get rid of the bent elbow), stepping (You step infront of your feet, make you look crap), Balancing arm (Keep it still, your not trying to swim here), Step up (Annoying habit which I worked very hard on to remove from my own approche), Speed (Walk don't run), Release (Looks ify), Balancing leg (Kick it out abit more, its behind you to much)...

It is hard to see very well because it is quit dark.
I watched your video in slow motion to get a better look at things.

Things that I thought looked good:
leg to swing timing and follow through.

Things I saw that could give you trouble:
1 You bend your arm in your back swing once it is about 1/2 way up, this causes your down swing to be steeper and may cause you to grip the ball sub-consiously, costs you speed because the upper arm is still traveling up but the ball becomes stationary so it has less time for gravity to speed it up, may affect release timing due to inconsistent arm bend.

2 Your hips are not square to the target line forcing you to turn shoulders or through across your body to hit the intended target line (you did both) this costs you leverage and if the release is early or late it will be off target because of the shoulder coil that is involved. Your shoulders did end up square to the target on that shot though.

3 By the position of your hand at the end of your follow through it makes me think that you are bumping the ball at release because you end up with your hand curled and a cocked wrist. I used to do the same thing trying to increase revs but all it did was cause me to over turn the ball (excess axis rotation) which costs you lift.

You can take my observations or leave them, because no two bowlers bowl alike, but you are doing some of the things that I used to do and still do sometimes and when I did/do it costs me accuracy and leverage/revs.

PS: I am not trying to pick on or belittle your style just trying to give some advice that I think will help you become more consistent cause consistency is everything.

I really appreciate your help guys keep it coming please
Be as blunt as you want I can take it I can't tell if I had a push away either some times when I get lazy I just drop it (as well as pop up)

My ballance arm has always done that no coach has ever pointed it out to me so I never though of changing it.

My bent arm is something every coach has pointed out but never told me how to change it.

My release is the only thing I'm happy about

Did you guys catch my blue hair?

I wan't to be perfect so blast away!

Well I myself have gone over a major redo of my approche, I filmed myself and tried to fix all my faults, the only things I need to work on now are my semi-muscling of the ball and relaxing my release, my actual approche is near perfect (Not quiet but its getting real close) Someday I'll post a vid.

You balance arm is easy to fix, all you have to do is focus on keeping it out and still, if you reduce your speed this will become easier, the bent elbow is a little harder to fix it will require alot of work and commitment (like me trying to rasie my back swing which i then over did and had to learn how to lower ) but really the secret to fixing your problems is to phyisicaly focus on it and try to change it, theres nothing that you can really do that will instanly change it you just have to do it...

Also I might add that its a good idea to watch people with flawless approches and see how they do what they do, then try to imatate it...

The problem is I can't feel my arm bending so it makes it hard to really focus on keeping it from bending. There is a guy around here that is so smooth it looks like he isn't doing any thing at all a flawless approach and could go pro if he really wanted to but he doesn't really bowl where I do so I rarely see him but it really is a treat to see him bowl.

ig--If you haven't heard this before...one HoF'er by the name of Don Carter had a very definite bent elbow style.  There are others.

Get the opinions of "real" in person one on one qualified coaches to give you their opinions.  Remove some flaws and issues to work on.

Yes and was voted at one time the best bowler of ALL time.  See if you can find some older shots of him and you'll see his bent arm style.

What is the best technique for most is NOT the best technique for all.  I am not saying that at an early age you might not want to go to a locked elbow ala 95% of all bowlers....BUT opinions here are what you paid for 'em....worth nothing.  The majority are NOT qualified coaches.  Good bowlers yes.

Have an open mind.

Opinions on here are worth nothing, that's funny. If they are worth nothing why do you come here? Granted I am not a certified coach but I can still spot things that are considered by many to be bad in a bowlers form. What makes a good coach is one that can spot flaws and give tips to remedy the flaws. I didn't see where anyone said how to solve the flaws so I don't think any of us are trying to be his coach, only trying to give sound advice and I don't think that you basically telling him to ignore our advice is sound advice.

*Rant mode off*
