What's a good sport, and what kind of a sport are you?
« on: January 18, 2004, 08:32:57 AM »
While reading another thread, it got me to thinking -
What makes a good sport?
What kind of sports (man/woman) are you?

I think a good sport is someone who recognizes the skill and/or luck of others, and is willing to recognize a good shot/game/result no matter how well they are doing.
In other words - even if they're bowling really, really bad, they can always find something positive to say about someone else's strike.

I would hope that I'm a good sport most of the time. A couple of times that I can remember, I was so "in a zone" bowling extremely well myself, that I didn't notice someone else's struggle. I feel kinda bad about that.
However - I always go out of my way to congratulate someone on a huge score (300,800), because whether I like them or not, it's still an achievement.

On the other side of the coin - the night I shot 811, an individual bowling on the other team not only failed to congratulate me for the score (their choice - and not a problem one way or another), but deliberately turned their face to a corner so they wouldn't be watching anyone else congratulate me. That's sad to be that upset that someone bowled well.

I know that at times I am not as friendly as I should be.  I try to focus on the task at hand no matter what.  Sometimes I overlook others scores and accomplishments, but I always try to pat someone on the back when they do well.

However, I do not like cheerleaders.  Nothing drives me crazier than people who feel it necessary to comment on EVERYONES shot.  I mean if a guys gos brooklyn then slap their hand and say NICE SHOT LEFTY.

I have no choice but to be a good sport.  There just isn't anyway I can criticize a lucky carry after the garbage that's fallen for me.

It's just a game, relax and have fun.  So what if someone carries a back door strike on you.  Your turn will come.

The only thing that really gets my goat is our chronic complainers about the lane conditions, the transitions, the bad carry, you name it.  The ones that act like the bad breaks only happen to them.

I am a good sport, usually one of the first people to give praise to people who bowl well, whether it's something as simple as picking up a difficult spare/split all the way up to an honor score/ series. Even when I'm bowling down in the dumps I can look around and see some good bowling somewhere in the league. I very rarely run into cases of poor sportsmanship, and usually they happen when someone has been drinking a little too much on the lanes. I've probably encountered 2-3 cases in my 28 years of bowling though.

I am a good sport for the most part. Although, there are times when I get too focused on my game and what I need to do to bowl well and that causes me to not acknowledge what else is going on around me. I always congratulate the opposing team at the end of the night though, no matter who won or lost!!

To be honest, I'm not as good a sport as I should be.  I don't purposely snub the other team, or try to be rude, but I tend to get too caught up in my own frustration when I'm not doing well.  At times like this, I usually keep to myself and tune out what's around me - good or bad.  I take this stupid game too serously for no better than I am, I need help!
