heres why I love bowling
« on: September 04, 2004, 01:53:06 AM »
only in bowling can you not participate at all for the bettor part of 3 months, didn;t even pick up the balls since last years leaque ended, and go out the first nite of league and look like a star.  I shot 687 thurs nite, after 6 practice balls that led me to believe that not only was I rusty but that I had no shot.  A 224,217,246 later I this weeks hero and 2 pots richer. everybody else struggled.  I just dont get it, you cant do that with many other sports, I dont golf, but I have to believe that it would be difficult to excell on the links after a 3 month lay off......comments?

Bones

My experience is that the same people who don't respect it as challenging, are also unable to do it themselves.  Bowlers appreciate other bowlers, because we know how tough it can really be to score high, consistently.  ANYBODY can throw 1 or 2 strikes, or shoot a 250 game....fewer can avg 200-210 every year, can shoot a 700 etc......

Amen Bones.

But Perfecone's statement is a very important statement to be heard.  He is not alone.  The majority of people continue to bowl because they can do just what Perfecone does--take the summer off, and come back without hardly missing a beat.

So how do we get those bowlers to change their mindset?  How do we get once a week bowlers to actually want to work at getting better?  Right now, they don't have to, so why should they?

IMHO, I think it's just an education process that has to happen.  We need to present "real" bowling to everybody, show them the advantages of "real" bowling versus adult bumper bowling, and then let them make the choice.  Right now we are asking people to make an uneducated choice and then we're stunned when they want to keep bowling on their wall shots.

This isn't rocket science.

I may have misread .. but I thought I read that perfecone was the only one that had a good night I think he said EVERYBODY ELSE STRUGGLED .. seems like you guys are talking to something else .. I say CONGRATULATIONS .. hope you continue doing well!

Opening week I bowled like a PRO .. then came the second week .. LOOKED LIKE A BUM .. (much closer to what I am!). Funny how we all see something different .. or is it someone leads us astray?

Joe, you probably were relaxed figuring not to expect much for the first couple weeks. But, how many times have you hammered the pocket only to leave 10 pins and said man I bearly shot 600 but should have had 700 easy.

CT .. like I said .. I WAS A BUM THE 2nd WEEK .. I think that's the point to the original poster .. CAN HE MAINTAIN THAT STROKE .. I DIDN'T ..

You are right we start with new averages after three games .. I was OVER MY HEAD! Lucky thing was the second week we bowled a team that held their averages down the first week .. there was NO WAY we were going to beat them .. I bowled so bad that I may now be LOWER then my normal average. Some how it always EVENS out!

PERFECONE .. I hope you continue to KNOCK THEM DOWN!

Most bowlers want an easy shot so they can post honor scores.  When the shot is difficult many bowlers will complain and threaten to take their league to another house.  Unfortunately a 200 average today doesn't mean much.

If you are serious about your game join a scratch league and participate in tournaments.
