What's your adjustment?
« on: November 24, 2004, 12:15:06 AM »
Ran into this last night and wondered what you fine folks would do.
In the bag: Buzzsaw Uranium, box condition, pin above and between fingers, CG out about halfway; Buzzsaw XXXL; Buzzsaw Bullet, box condition, pin by ring finger, CG near mid-palm.

You start with the Uranium, looking at 8, with about medium hand (for you) and the ball is having some trouble making the turn - miss right a tad and your in 2-8-10 territory.  So you decide to tighten it up a bit and move into 10, same ball.  Not playing much swing, laydown at about 14.  Ball hits "flush", strike, but the 10 is late - 6 comes off the wall to get it.  Next frame you repeat this shot exactly - same late 10.  Next you miss a bit right and leave a 2 pin.  Can you see it coming now?  Next you are back flush and OOPS, pocket 7 - 10.  Time to make a move.  What do you do?  Seems that the options are:
1) move deeper - but previously you have noted that with this layout the Uranium seems to ping 10 pins when deep.
2) move out, with the Uranium.
3) move out with the Bullet.
4) increase hand, stay put, don't change balls.
5) move out with either ball and increase hand.

There are probably more variations, but those are what come immediately to mind.
What seems to have happened to the lanes is that we have gone from doubly stripped back ends to back ends that start out with "carrydown" and get worse as things go on.

After a while, or 10 or so replies, I'll let you know what I did and how it worked.

It's been a long time here in Eastern PA since I have seen any kind of oil at all, but I can remember that whenever I did encounter anything like you are describing here, I would try to decrease my ball speed and try to get the ball to roll earlier. If I couldn't get any good results with that method, I went in the opposite direction, and tried the old "rocket to the pocket" technique.

Depending on how far down the lane you spot, I would bring my eyes a foot back or so to try and get the ball into an earlier roll. I might move a few boards right as well hoping that there was a bit more reaction there and to take advantage of the oil inside. Your description looks like you were pretty close. After 30 years, it still amazes me how a small move can make all the difference. Hope this helps.

Since we have to leave the building in 20 minutes (power's going off for some reason), here's what I did.

I switched to the Bullet and moved right with maximum hand (for me).  Played up 4 board, finished game 2 with 6 or 7 in a row.  AHA, says me, I've got it.  WRONG!!
By the start of game 3 I was running into maximum carrydown - the Bullet wouldn't turn up either.  So, back to the Uranium, same line and hand, just moved a board left.  But by then it was too late to salvage much of anything.  I'm thinking that maybe my SS Particle, deeper in might have worked.  I'm getting pretty frustrated the last 2 weeks - I know I'm close to getting the best shot, but just don't guite git the job done.

Rags, maybe switch from Buzzsaws to Storm balls like I did?....Just kidding other than I did successfully switch. In seriousiness, I agree with what Sawbones said which was:
quote:
Rags, it would seem you were able to find a shot that got you to the pocket, but the ball deflected too much causing it to hit the 3 pin too squarely.

My option on carry down is to go to my scuffed up ThunderFlash(urethane) which as you know is less affected by the carry down. I also try to get the ball down earlier to increase its roll so it is rolling as it enters the pocket instead of having too much tilt.

I've currently had a similiar condition for the past 3 weeks in one of the two houses that I bowl in. I switched from my normal  Storm Depth Charge in this house to my Storm Triple X Extreme which is drilled with Pin under ring finger which gets the ball rolling in the mid-lane sooner and the RAD in the strong position. I lightly scuffed the ball as Sawbones says and it worked. Before I did that, I was like you in that I was leaving a 2-8-10every time I had a light hit on the pocket.
