Changeable thumb... questions
« on: July 22, 2008, 07:37:04 AM »
ok...

I know two systems:
Switch grip
and
Grip Loc

now Switch grip made its way to Germany and there are at least three proshops I know using switch grip..

Any experiences with Grip Loc here? and what is that with switch grip?

Am "fighting" to get a good feeling in the thumbhole ... I have one ball which is perfect... the rest is giving me headache

We've used the Switch Grip system on a couple of customers...it's a good system but having to change back and forth can be a pain (Strike to spare ball) and we had issues with a couple breaking over time.

Honestly if you have a thumb that you love I would have a mold made of it.  That's what I've done with my own equipment and I love it.

You have two options for getting the same feel from ball to ball.  One is interchangeable thumb inserts.  The other is getting a slug made from a mold of the thumbhole that does feel good.  The reason I use interchangeable thumbs is because my thumb changes sizes pretty drastically depending on the time of day, so it's much easier and more consistent than adding and removing large quantities of tape all the time.  I can have a looser thumbhole for mornings and a tighter thumbhole for nights.

I'm not familiar with Grip Loc, but I used to have Switch Grips.  They were pretty good, but I had issues with some outer sleeves being much tighter than others (making it nearly impossible to get the insert out of the ball sometimes) and had a couple break on me.

I recently started installing Vise's new IT interchangeable thumb, but have only had them for about a week now and my ball driller and I are just now perfecting the installation process.  (We had to lower his drill press slightly to accomodate the hole for the molly that gets inserted deep in the ball at the base of the thumb inserts)  The system is very well-engineered though.  They put a lot of thought into how to do it best.  As I mentioned before, I'm going to post some pics of this when I get a chance.  (Been too busy the past few days!)

And yes, it's a pain to switch thumb inserts regularly -- I do NOT use an interchangeable thumb on my spare ball.  I'm not as worried about the feel on it being perfect, so that's fine for me.

k... thanks so far

Getting the feeling a mold would be the best... but where to get one? how to do it? Germany is still "bowling wasteland" in terms of such specialized equipment...

well... I'll see what other oppinions come.

I've used Grip Loc and have no complaints. It's very easy to install, and you don't need a 1 1/2" bit like you do with Turbo's Switch Grip.

I currently use switch grip and have not had any problems.
I don't recommend doing the spare ball. Too much wear and tear. You may want to get a mold of the switch grip and put that in the spare ball but I never bothered. Adding or subtracting tape in a single ball don't take but a minute.
I was having trouble with my gear on the longer format tourneys. It was a pain to change the thumb size in six different balls. Now I set up one insert and my spare ball and I'm good to go.
I will be using inserts of some kind from now on.

I am interested in the IT but haven't seen the system.
Tried the grip lok when it first came out and had issues.
I saw the system at Nationals and it looked like it had been improved also.Deeper groove and improved tab.So I would probably like it now.
I have heard of problems with switch grip but that seems to happen with the original set up. I've been told they improved since first intro.

I put 70-100 Grip Loc Thumbs in balls at the booth in ABQ,NM.

A really good product and very easy to install. Our demo ball had to be changed out between 700-1000 times and it still "clicked" in solid and snug.

It really is a great product.
I have heard all the horror stories about the Switch Grips breaking and hurting people. I chose not to ever even try it in my shop because of that reason.

so the grip loc systems "sleeve" in the ball is smaller?

I need... or rather use a 1-1/4 slug which is exactly what the switchgrip system uses....

Beans somw questions to the grip loc system:

the inserts are pre-manufactured and can be trimmed to size?
Cause I like a oval thumb so I buy a size the thumb si drilled and do make this oval then?

The Grip loc system seems to be easier to install and also the better way with the dog (technical ) at the side of the insert... whereas the switchgrip system uses this bayonet cap at the bottom.

I'll have to wait till winter anyway and save up the money to redo my whole arsenal if I really will change them to switchable thumbs.

Just a quick update, I now have the Vise IT thumbs in all of my equipment (except the spare ball, of course).  Now that we've figured out how deep to drill holes, etc., it's very quick and easy to install, and the repeatability is great.  Every ball feels the same on the thumb.  Almost no variance in height or pitch or anything.  It uses a much smaller hole than the Turbo Switch Grips since it's basically a standard thumb slug with a screw-in base (with a molly at the bottom for extra strength and durability) and a thin plastic ring in the top part of the thumbhole.  I've got all the pics now and should be able to post more info on these tonight.  But so far I love them.

I've got to make one more comment here...while the interchangable thumbs are a good system it still doesn't get around the core issue that Grayson is having: Only one thumb of his feels good.  This is a key point because if his driller can't recreate the feel of that particular thumb how is any interchangable thumb system going to help here...that driller is still going to have to recreate this thumb's feel in a new slug first.  That's the only reason that I bring up a mold.
