High Average record?
« on: June 06, 2005, 01:01:24 PM »
We all know Rev O's exploits this year. What is the record for a sanctioned season average?
A Born again bowler with a mission to bowl 300.

Keep in mind that all sport conditions are not equal. A lot of things come into play when you are talking about "sport patterns". Lane surface is the biggest key. If you are bowling on a good surface ( i.e pro-anvilane or HPL9000 ) the scoring pace should be much higher than if you are bowling on older wood or any type of overlay ( i.e lane shield, guardian ). Another factor that comes into play is if the leagues varies the patterns from week to week. Some sport leagues use as many as 5 different patterns and they rotate them equally throughout the year. If a league uses 1 pattern for the entire year, the better players will adapt and become proficient at it. Another huge factor is the quality of players in the league ( or specifically on a pair ). Better players know how to break down patterns to make it look like almost a normal house pattern. If you use your practice time wisely, have a game plan going in and you are staying on the same pair of lanes for the night you can see some pretty good scores come out of sport leagues. The thing that i don't agree with is that all Sport Leagues are recognized as the same by the USBC, but as i described above they certainly aren't.

Don't forget to mention that in many sport leagues (including the one i'm bowling in) you change pairs after every game. This can be a real b1tch for the first few frames.

will start off by saying 261 is great on any shot-you must have-talent-understanind of changing conditions-the right ball matchup-carry. Basically everything.

but to say

"I believe next high average one the league was mid 230s."

this doesnt help the cause, but hurt it

i bowl in detroit and we have a few good bowlers id say
andnot many league have a guys 230+
let alone say the next high

im sure the shot wasnt that topugh, but most are NOT know adays

its a great accopmlishment that doesnt need explaining _PERIOD

Our summer sport league is 15 weeks and uses 5 patterns so every 3 weeks a new pattern, you start to figure it out by the 3 rd week and boom new pattern. YOur shot making skills improve greatly but your flaws in your game are magnified greatly also.

I have seen many guys playing 7 th arrow all with big revs of course but if you loft the gutter cap some it is not that hard. Some of these guys laid it down right on the 7 th arrow and some just lofted the ball the first 10 feet which is not the same technically. When i bowled a state tournament a couple of years ago George Palumbo who won a TAC tournament a couple of years back was playing 7 th arrow with a plastic ball and still hooking the lane shooting 200's. If you have the tilt and revs it is not that hard but not easy for guys like me to even attempt.

Jeff CArter and Jeff Mop are both highly skilled bowlers i have watched Jeff Mop before in vegas tournaments, he is great bowler on any shot period. I am sure Jeff Carter knows how important shot making is and the number he produces comes second to executing his bests shots with the correct weapon in his hand. Its like Norm Duke always says its the bowler not the ball!!

Conditions are not easy everwhere.

I go and watch are local high average bowlers and NO one is 230.

The almost 230 guy has a physical game that rivals anyone I have ever seen!

The high lefty for 3 years had been 211!  Until this year.

Not easy everywhere!

REgards,

PS I recently bowled with Mr. Great mechanics on a more typical league crown and blend with dry to outside.  He really could have shot 879 if he had had a little carry.  Not a mixer not a strike did not knock 10 in the pit but 1.  The others were all awesome looking 10 pins (about 5 of them).

Next two games were all perfect except for 1 8!  Not a mixer not a messenger, just crack 10 in the pit, about 49 out of 51 balls thrown for strike!  Dead flush!  Still didn't average 261! PS on national listings I believe he is 2nd or 3rd in 300 games behind Jeff Carter!

MBNut,

Quote - "Its like Norm Duke always says its the bowler not the ball!!"

That statement does not hold true for the Sport of Bowling of today. The ball Technology has made a difference. I am not taking away from anybody's abilities mentioned on this post, but.....here is my question:

Would we have these high  averages and scores without the help of Cores and Coverstocks?

Don't get me wrong, I have new equipment. It has helped me.  My average would definitely drop if I didn't.

Just adding some thought to the topic.

I'm also in detroit, and there are at least 25 guys i can name off the top of my head under 25 that average 230 or 240+ around here.
