This post is welcome to all who can give advice on how to hit your target better. Are there any special visualization you do to help you hit your mark? Do you think about the target in a certain way?  do you tell yourself some stuff to help you? It seems like the true problem in bowling is being able to hit the target. Once you can do that all the time then you're going to be a pretty darn good bowler regardless of stance, physical or mental game. Right? Please give all that you can give on this topic. Thanks for your time.

Patrick

PS Silly posters, this is not for you. So don't even try to act like you know everything.

I think one thing is just training yourself to keep your head level, and focus on the target at all times.  As soon as you get on the approach, stare at your target and continue until even after you release and the ball is going down the lane.  I think it's just something you have to train yourself to do.

Just like spare shooting, the key to accuracy is repetition and having the basic fundamentals down.

An old trick I was taught is to look at THREE boards, not one. When you try to hit one board and miss, you start trying to point and that will kill your release.
An easy way to practice this is to lay a dollar bill down lengthwise and hit it,regardless of pinfall. Hit this consistently and you'll relax and be able to say to yourself that even though my target is 15, if I hit 14 or 16 I'll still be close.
 I hope this helps.........

First, know your head belly. What I mean by head belly is the distance, in boards, between my slide point and the ball laydown point. My drift is 6 boards, and the actual head belly at the line is 8 boards. If I am trying to hit the #8 board at the laydown point, I will have to stand at board #10 at the set-up phase. Because I drift six boards, and my head belly is 8 boards, I will end up landing on the 16 board with my slide foot and the ball will drop at the 8 board. I know this will happen every time I make a good shot because I know my head belly.

Once you know that, you just have to focus on repeating shots and visualizing you will do that over and over again. The visualization process is individual. You will have to find a visualization process that works for you. What might work for me, may not work for you so you will have to end up trying different visualization practices through time.

Just some things you might want to think about.

For a long time i dipped my head when i threw the ball, it was fine on easy condidtions but i suffered on tuff ones. Finally i told my friend who is also my coach i want to be better on tough condidtions, he smiled and said i am finally ready to be a complete package. First he had me untuck my pinky, so after a couple weeks of that step 2 came around, which was me keeping my head level. Wow it was harder then i thought but what a difference it makes, i never realize how much more accurate i am keeping my head level and how much less my ball over reacts. I know can concentrate on my mark and know if i hit it i have a good chance to strike, now don't let me fool you i am still working the kinks out but everyday it gets better and i know one day soon i will just be second nature and i am glad i did that.

Variation of what windoor and nd300 have said...

I teach bowlers to shoot "down a pipe" three boards wide (on a THS you don't need to be more accurate).  The front part of the pipe starts at the arrows and other end of the pipe stops at 30' (halfway).

The pipe can be angled various amounts dependent upon the condition.

The ball MUST enter the pipe at the arrows and exit at 30'.  The bowler must see the entire pipe while making the shot.

This especially helps those that tend to drift differently from shot to shot on the approach.

The biggest aid in accuracy for me is lining up into my shot.
In other words, walking towards my shot - not straight.

I drift 3 right. Always have, always will.
If I was playing straight up, knowing I lay the ball down 7 boards right of my left foot, I would have to line up my left foot 10 boards left of my target. (3 boards drift +7 boards laydown point). In order to keep my swing straight, if I'm swinging the ball right, I need to line up the appropriate number of boards left, and tilt my feet a little to walk into the shot. So... If I want to hit 12 at the arrows, with a laydown point at 18, I would line up at , with my feet tilted to go 3 more right (besides my drift). Target is release point is 18, +7 for the laydown point, +3 for my drift, + 1/2 the swing in boards (3) = 18+7+3+3.
Make sense?

IMHO, one absolute "must" to be accurate -- no matter what you do with your backswing and follow through, in the one foot area when you release the ball, your swing MUST be traveling dead straight toward your target.  --  JohnP
