Mika's grip
« on: March 03, 2006, 11:54:45 AM »
I was just clicking around on the brunswick insider's site and realized I never checked out the info about Mika.  So I go down to the part about his grip, this...

And then I realize.  First off, he has a pretty small span for how tall he is.  But that's not the thing I was surprised by.  Unless there is a typo, according to that sheet he has 7/8" reverse on his fingers!  Anyone know what the deal with that is?  Either he has the stiffest fingers ever, or he really had a big problem with getting his fingers out of the ball cleanly/quickly and had to resort to that.  Anyone know?

Many of the Pros have gone to this type of grip from what I understand. It keeps them from grabbing the ball at the release and the shorter span enables them to still get good revs on the ball.

Chris Barnes and Jason Couch also use this type of grip.

The problem with the PBA lane patterns isn't getting the ball to hook, it's keeping it from hooking in the wrong places, and the only way to do that is to feed the ball down the lane to the breakpoint with as little force as possible, but still get enough revs to carry well and create good entry angle.

I went to 5/8 reverse 2 years ago. Best thing I ever did. Being from the old urethane "hit up on it" school. I really struggled with the reactive stuff. Really helped me control the amount of hit I want to put on the ball.
