I have one team in my fall league that brings down their wives and sometimes kids to watch them bowl. I'm all for family fun but these same relatives sit in the chairs behind the lanes that are for the bowlers. Since there are only 5 chairs unless you get there early you're SOL. I have a bum knee and need to sit down between frames and I don't enjoy sitting in the settee area i.e. difficult to talk to teammates etc. How can I bring this up without appearing to be a jerk? This team has been in the league for years and otherwise I enjoy bowling against them.

I could be wrong but he is not talking about the setee area. He is talking about the sitting area behind the lanes, where the public is able to sit.

I completely agree with you Bob, that your rugrats should be entertained while there are there. I do not bring my kids to the bowling alley when I am in league. And if someone brings them to watch me, I do not let them down on the "pit" area, because that is for bowlers.

Going back to the OT in this thread, there does appear to be confusion about exactly where this poster is discussing. The layouts in older centers are much more defined as to where the bowlers area ends and the public areas begin behind the lanes. The modern facilities have blended these areas and there is a grey zone where people are not sure where the bowler area ends. BLame POOR designing for that.

What this topic appears to question is a lack of COMMON COURTESY. He states he has a bad knee so it is highly probable that he is most comfortable sitting with his leg extended. Doing this in the bowlers areas can be hazardous as these areas are notoriously cramped everywhere.

While all have the right to sit at the public area tables behind the lanes. COMMON COURTESY would dictate that spectators in that area SHOULD accomodate to the needs of bowlers first and give a seat to the bowler who has to sit with his leg extended.

If the displaced family member were well behaved and non-intrusive, I would not have any objections to the displaced family member sitting in the bowler's area in an exchange of seating positions.

If I were in inconsistent 1's position, I would ask the bowler who brought his family and the other bowlers if one of the family members could sit in the bowlers area so I could have a seat at the public table where I could keep my leg in a comfortable position.

It is really easy to find one of those collapsable chairs that you can find in the camping/sporting goods area in any store. If it was my family that were asked to sit elsewhere that would be the last night I would bowl in that league.

I can't believe what I'm reading. You're saying it's the responsibility of the bowler, on top of having to bring in his equipment every night -- to say nothing of being the one actually performing the task of bowling -- to have to bring in a folding chair so YOUR family can have a place to sit?

You have it completely backwards. If there are 10 bowlers and only 10 seats available, the 10 bowlers get first pick of those 10 seats. Do you guys go to baseball games and sit in the dugout and make the players move? I didn't think so.

If someone needs to bring folding chairs in, it's the family members. After all, they're not carrying (or throwing) bowling balls.

If you'd get bent out of shape over it on the league I'm on, it really would be your last night to bowl in that league. We had this same situation pop up in our house last year, one of the teams called a meeting before league started and the league unanimously voted to keep player-area seating reserved for players only. That was the end of it.

Bring the collapsable chair from a store like Wal-mart i bought 3 of these for like 7.99 each. Hey they even have a built in beer can holder, very comfortable and it is your chair that nobody can whine about.

Did you ask this family if they would mind giving up a chair behind the lanes you are bowling? I think most people would be alright with the situation and give a chair to you.

If you didn't....then how is this family supposed to know you need a chair?

Are you going to request the league apply a rule that non-leauge members must give up their seats for league members outside the bowlers area? And what will be the penalty? This rule will never stick if your league is in the USBC.

Just to clarify my point. I understand that he is talking about the general sitting area "behind" the bowlers area. Not the section by the lanes. If it is too much for a 2lbs camping chair, ask a teammate that gets there early to save a chair. Would I quit, probably not... but would be ticked.

If there is no sitting area by the lanes and these tables are the only sitting area than I think that he has a complaint and he should address it with the bowler who's family is in the seats. In the league I am in there are 50% of the bowlers who stand by the pit area. So it is easy for everyone that comes to sit if they wish. Some newer lanes are definately different.

When it comes down to it, inconsistent 1: take it up with the bowler. I bet that he is fine with asking one of the kids to share a chair with someone else to give you a seat. If you address it to him and he is a jerk about it, then bring it up in the bowlers meeting.
