You have to put out your own news.  We called the local tv station and got an interview.  We call the local papers.  An email campaign gets underway right after the state finals.  You have to put out the news yourself.  Chances are that no one understands or knows you exist.  Do you really think that any college coaches are going to make the an effort to go to your centers and see you??? You may be the state champs but do you promote yourselves???  To tell you the truth when I was in high school I cared less about the football team or any athletics that I was not playing.  Ask the tennis, swimming or golf teams about the way they are treated.  You'll probably find it is about the same.  Does your high school team have a website???  Do the people at school know where it is???  Do you send information off to colleges about your team and website?  Getting recognition takes work.  Check out the Irving High School bowling club website.

I agree. We don't have anything close to resembling High School bowling here. We don't even have a youth Travel League...

When I was in high school back in 94-98, There was no high school bowling teams. When I bowled in Youth leauges, there was no traveling leauges. 6 years later my High School Finally got some high school bowling teams. Unfortunately its ONLY girls bowling but thats a start. And 1 year after I was forced out of YABA because of age, the very next year.........a travel leauge was formed!!

For those of you who have H.S. Bowling and Travel Leauges, be happy you have em as many never had that in their past.

As for no recognition, you have to display yourself in order to get recognized. Tell local papers (they will print it because I report all the weeks high scores from the past Sat. and they put it in the paper on teusday usually), call the local news TV station, tell your High school reporter (if you have a high school paper).........get out there and tell the world, then you'll get peoples attention.

Ok I looked around and we have several of the top students in their class.  They are going to Baylor, Stanford, University of North Texas, Wichita State, University of Dallas, and one possibly to West Texas A&M.  Last year we graduated all our seniors with honors and all went to college.  I see a bunch of smart kids that stay in school and go to college.  They are academically sound and that is usually the first words out of a recruiting colleges mouth.  "What are their SATs, Where did they rank in their class, What is their GPA and then give me their bowling history"!  Try answering those questions with some of the athletes in other sports and compare.

Our team won state here in ohio and there was a nice long announcement the next monday at school about us... the bowling alley reckonized us when we got to bowl youth league again(calling us up on the approach infront of everyone).. the school board was there at state for us. ohio doesn't consider bowling as a school "sport" yet anyways... i think thats gonna change later this year.. but it felt nice to have the whole community backing us... i wish it was the same for other places

JDT

You must have read my BIO!  At one time I did have a TEA exemption to teach adults CIS.  I was a corporate instructor for a major electronics firm and taught many school districts staff members to use their computer software.  Along with the school districts I have taught the Internal Revenue Service, Emery World Wide, The First State Bank of Texas and the City of Dallas Utilies Dept and other organizations.  Being accredited myself has nothing to do with anything.  Our internal school sponsor is accredited and he deals with the school district affairs and the students at school.  I am a bowling coach and a volunteer.  It is the combination of the two of us that make it work.  You need to go to the Texas State High School Bowling Championships in Houston and take a look around. Why would a college bowling coach go to a high school???  The athletic director is clueless in many school districts.  There are very few high coaches of any sport that are able to coach bowling properly. Ok here is a few things for you!

About The Coach

Robert C. Maxfield II,  Director of Coaching and Development Striking Cat Bowling

Robert Maxfield currently has over 40 years of bowling experience.  He turned his interest to coaching in the summer of 2003 obtaining his first certification the USA Bowling Bronze from Gold Level Coach Susie Minshew.    That year Maxfield joined The Irving High School Bowling Club as Head Coach leading both boys and girls varsity teams to the state tournament.  The Irving High School Boys team also won the Dallas West District Championship and Tournament.  The Lady Tigers placed second in the district.  During the spring of 2004 Coach Maxfield went to Fairview Heights Illinois to study under PBA Hall of Famer and Coaching Legend Dick Ritger.  He acquired both the Ritger level 1 and 2 certifications.  That same year in August,  Coach Maxfield received his USA Bowling / USBC Coaching Silver level from Rod Ross, USA Bowling Gold Certified Coach, Master Instructor for USA Bowling, Head Coach of Junior Team USA and a member of the IBPSIA Board of Directors.  Once again the Irving High School Bowling Club was State Tournament bound.  Coach Maxfield led the undefeated in district play Lady Tigers past the Central Texas Regional and straight to the State Championship Tournament placing 33rd.  The Irving Boys also had a fine finish to the season placing 30th with junior Hector Arellano winning the Texas State High School Bowling Boys Singles Championship and the Dallas Morning News All Area Boys Bowler of the year! Coach Maxfield continues to coach beyond the high school ranks.  January of 2006 he received his Level I and Level II certifications In Rogers Arkansas from Instructor Bob Shumate.  Robert Maxfield is currently working to become a Level I coaching instructor and continue teaching, he has focused on the bowling youth.

The reason that high school bowling does not get the recognition it deserves in many cases lies with the schools themselves and the athletic directors.  It is true that it is on the bottom of the food chain but if no one will fight for it, it will die there.  As you can see some people would rather see it die than support it and that is a shame.  The only way to get people to know who you are is to take the ball to their court.  BTW I send letters to colleges and recruit them for my athletes!
