High tech VS Low Tech (RANT)
« on: October 24, 2010, 03:27:42 PM »
This year, for whatever reason, the center here has seemed to be putting out a shot that is quite a bit drier than last year, and I have been struggling.

Every ball I've tried this year has been a struggle, even the ones that worked best last year. I've tried to tone down the release, but have been very inconsistent because it is so unnatural for me. I was going through the closet for an older urethane piece when I came upon a ball that I had practically forgotten about, an old CLAW Hammer with an extremely mild cover and only a pancake weightblock in it.

Put it in the bag and thought I'd give it a whirl. During warmups it seemed a bit weak, so I scuffed it pretty good with a green scotchbrite (had nothing to lose), and prepared to bowl.

Suddenly, I had my look back. When I let it go, I knew where it was going, and when adjustments came, they were easy and made sense. I just had to make sure to let it go well enough to get it to carry, which wasn't too much of a problem, given the amount of dry outsides we have now.

I've struggled all season so far. I usually average around 210, but am at 204 in one league, and 195 in the other, and my high series so far has been about 650ish.  Tonight, using a dull 8yr old mild three piece reactive, I shot my highest series of the season, a 726.

Anybody else been having good luck with old stuff or low tech stuff?
