Title: Higher and lower differential bowling balls
Post by: BigHorhn on April 12, 2017, 12:30:14 PM
Do lower differential bowling balls work for low rev players? When do lower differential bowling balls come into play and for what players do high differential bowling balls work best?

I love High RG/Low diff combo balls for drier conditions. The Green Blue Centaur from Visionary (decade plus old) is a really good example that I have had the most use with. The RG is almost 2.7 and the diff is a paltry .015 and for a solid resin cover, the ball is super clean and needs a ton of friction to turn over.

With that said, the ball will skid past your intended breakpoint when encountering oil or if you overthrow it. Also, miss it a little at the bottom...10 pin city baby (or 7 for a lefty).

I have always thought you should use the most ball you can use on every condition and using a lower diff ball is giving away hitting power. The higher the diff, the stronger the core.

At the end, you need to match the ball with the condition.

Lower diff equipment can work for bowlers with lower rev rates, but you do need to be aware of their limitations in that situation. Often a lower diff ball with surface works, a shiny or really clean surface with lower diff will squirt or boomerang.
I often start with a lower diff ball on fresh, hooking conditions where I don't want a really strong reaction. If I can find something that carries for me, I start with it, knowing that as soon as I start seeing flat corners or blower corners, I may need to go to a stronger core in order to follow the pattern breakdown and continue to carry. Sometimes you can slowly chase a pattern in with that lower diff, sometimes it just won't work, and it is up to you to make that decision. Generally I try to keep lower diff equipment in front of me as much as possible so that it doesn't have to shape as much before it gets to the pocket.

As a lower rev player I prefer low rg balls.  Differential is a different matter.  It depends on the condition whether I prefer lower or higher diff.  My current arsenal call consists of everything below 2.5 rg, but with varying diff.

I'm a low rev/ low speed player, for myself I like a low rg and high diff ball on most conditions. But I recently switched houses and found myself on a shorter/lower oiled pattern. but I did have a green/blue centaur for that! It reminds me of ebonites V-2 dry, a particle ball made for drying lanes! It went straighter that my pearl jolt!

Cover is still the most important factor, but I would not recommend more than 1 lower diff ball for somebody with less hand unless they bowl on some VERY dry lanes or refuse to move out of the track area

I'm a low rev/ low speed player also and prefer lower RG and higher differential balls. Those type balls in the Motiv line of balls work great for me, but are becoming fewer and fewer to select from in their ball line-up which is forcing me to look elsewhere for balls with lower RG's and higher differentials. What I do like about Motiv which the other ball companies fail to do is that they use the same size and shape core in ALL weights of their balls plus their ball covers seem to absorb less oil and last a long time, but as said, their selection of low RG and higher differential balls is becoming more limited fo bowlers like myself.

I thank you for all of your comments. I think that the more ball that you can use the better. I like low rg high diff bowling balls. I have just started to play with the cover on the ball and my ball driller leaving room for a weight hole. I think that's the way that I will continue to go until I run into a dry condition that I can use the low diff bowling balls that I have.
