Coke Bottle Test
« on: November 08, 2011, 12:13:53 AM »
Just curious how many of you have lateral pitch in your thumbholes?  I am wondering what the significence is with the coke bottle test.  My thumb points directly to my middle finger.  Now, I have also read to pickup a pencil with all four fingers from a flat surface, in this case, my thumb falls in the middle of my index and middle fingers.

I'm guessing with the coke bottle test, that would equate to a 0 lateral pitch and with the pencil test, it would be away from palm (lateral left for righty)?  What gets me though, if I relax my hand face down, it sure does look as if it pitches way from my palm.  I know everybody is different, but in your case, did a change in lateral pitch make a difference for you?

Yes. I'm right handed. I eliminated callouses, torn skin, and improved my thumb release by pitching the thumb left of 0

The coke bottle test is just a guideline. I have seen several methods used over the years. Some pro shops will have you grab his or your wrist with your bowling hand. Others might have you pick up a pencil or a small object just to get an idea what your hinge angle is. The big key is the how flexible is your thumb and  determine what your grip is. If the thumb is pointing past the Index finger to the left = 1/4  lateral away from palm. At the index finger =  1/8 away lateral away from the palm. Between the index and middle finger = 0. At the middle finger = 1/8 lateral under the palm. Between the middle and ring fingers = 1/4 lateral under the palm. At the ring finger = 3/8 lateral under the palm. These pitches are just guide lines that drillers use and are not set in concrete. For most bowlers lateral pitches left  or away for a right hander will promote the bowler to stay behind the ball longer but the thumb comes out faster. Anything drilled right lateral or to the palm will promote the bowler to come more around the ball to some degree.

I agree. Along with the bottle test, is the key word which jodyk said and that is ... "guidelines".

For example, on the coke bottle test, my thumb points to my index finger which is 1/8 out pitch, but I use 1/4 out pitch as that works better for me than 1/8 out pitch.

Use it to get you an idea and then start tweaking as you go.

Mine is 1/2" reverse and 1/4" away. It feels great and gets the ball of my hand quick and clean. Never had problems with rubbing or pain. Just tweaks a little at a time till you feel you have what works and feels best.
