thumbhole problems in my new ball help please
« on: January 28, 2004, 09:30:10 AM »
I am going back to the pro shop tomorrow, but i wanted to hear some opinions first before going.

I just got a new white dot for spare shooting.  The ball is drilled the same way as my Urethane Gyro except they drilled the thumb hole a size smaller cause they noticed I had a lot of tape in my Gyro's thumb hole.

In my Gyro I added tape cause the thumbhole was too big and I was having to grip the ball too much and cause a lot of rubbing and blistering sometimes on the base of my thumb.

Before I left the pro shop on monday, I tried the thumb hole and my thumb got stuck. So they took a little more material out of the thumbhole and it seemed to fit fine.

I bowled with it tonight and by the third game I started to get a lot of rubbing on the top of my thumb(the knuckle part below the thumb nail), and base of my thumb and some on the palm of my hand below the base of my thumb. Does my description make sense?

The pro shop that drilled my white dot is not the same pro shop that drilled my Gryo. Since they went off of the specs of the Gryo to drill the white dot, could it be that I have an improper fit and that is why I am having thumb problems in my new ball as I had in the old ball?

Could my span or thumb pitch be off?  What should I do?  Thumb Insert, or slug maybe?

I'll show them my thumb so they can see whats going on?

I just hope I can get this figured out quickly.

I think he took a dremel tool to the inside of the hole the first time.

I'll have him try that first.

P77,

You are doing what we call knuckling up or squeezing the ball.  This is incorrect..the smaller thumb is actually better for you.  Try this, place your hand in the ball, put the ball down on the ground and relax.  Try releasing the ball (with relaxed thumb), can you come out?  If you do, this means when you're bowling, your gripping the ball with your thumb, tip down making contact.  When you do that, you're physically altering the diameter of your thumb.  You're making it wider then it really is.  Here's another test, leave the ball on the ground, can you place your thumb only in the ball?  Does it slide in and out easily?  There's a simple rule, if you can get your thumb in, then you can get it out.  You have to learn one of 2 things, relax as much as possible because this will not cause your thumb to bend or if you want to apply some pressure, apply it at the first joint of the thumb so that it remains straight and not bent at the tip.  The catch here is that in order for you to relax, you have to have a snug thumb(tape it), if the thumb is loose at all, you have no choice but to grip it when it's in motion...it's a catch 22.  Hope this info helps...contact me directly if you need any further help.
