On certain reviews on this site I've noticed when reviewing urethane balls some say they don't hit as hard as their reactives. If I had two balls, a urethane and a reactive, and they had the same breakpoint and entry angle (let's imagine the urethane has a stronger core) why would a reactive hit harder than a urethane? Is the difference people see simply a matter of entry angle?

Isn't hits hard usually just a function of proper breakpoint.

When my ball hits hard it just always seems to square up at just the right point and drive and crack!

Sawbones so in reading your post if you encounter carrydown do you switch to urethane???

With the extreme dry outsides and flying backends, you really don't need reactive to carry if you make good shots.

My answer is no. Because, it's the core of the ball that makes one hit harder than the other. So, a urethane ball could hit harder than a resin.

If you listen to the sound of the strike, you can hear the difference between different balls. Some sound louder, like more of a crack. Buzzsaw's sound the loudest, in my opinion. =:^D

I agree with TGOD

The core makes the difference. The older urethanes had simple pancake weight blocks(most of them). Today with a urethane like C300s Black Messenger, or Lane 1s XXL they hit just as hard. About 10 yrs or so ago C300 came out with the Stingray/C, I believe it had an almost identical core as the Cuda/C and it hit tremendously.

More on the reactive vs urethane though, if there is carry down, and you do not have the urethane scuffed or sanded, it will hit terribly.

"Hit", to me, is a measure of how well the ball is releasing it's energy to the pins. "Good Hit" comes from the proper match up of ball (core and cover), speed and release to the conditions. It makes no sense to say "reactive hits harder than urethane" without quatifying the circumstances.

I would be willing to bet that a 3 piece pearl urethane will hit harder than a Super Carbide Bomb on dry conditions for most bowlers. Does that mean that urethane hits harder than particle or a pancake core hits harder than a Lane1 diamond? Only on the conditions in question for the bowler in question. Certainly the opposite would be true on a flood.

I have a blue Gargoyle which is urethane. I like the ball tremendously because the ball doesn't overhook when the lanes are dry, but It doesn't drive through the pins like my reactive stuff does. The light hits are no longer automatic, but the high flush hits carry better. It definitely deflects more. Perhaps this is more apparent because I roll 14 #?

I have a Visionary Midnight Scorcher Particle Urethane ball and I have never seen any ball roll through the pins as hard as this balls does. Once it gets into a heavy roll nothing will stop it. Even very light hits carry.

If urethane did not hit as hard as resin then Jakob Buttruff would not exclusively use a Purple Hammer Urethane on tour.

when louie is the last poster who know a thread is old (do enjoy some of his old school reviews). Its important to note that Buttruff is a left hander so he sees less transition and doesn't have to move in as much (admits his A game is playing the twig). Therefore he can generally keep his angles pretty straight. Not to mention due to his double jointed wrist he is putting nearly Belmo revs on the ball. For your style sure urethane might carry just as well but not true for most I would say. For some houses though urethane does really shine. Do really like my Purple Hammer admittedly.

(edit: wow didn't realize he uses convention grip either, basically the guy is a one off)
