Title: hitting the ball with the pad
Post by: r534me on October 10, 2011, 04:49:22 PM
How many games do you bowl on your equipment before hitting it with an abralon pad (or whatever you use) to freshen it up? I don't have a hard and fast rule but when I start noticing the changes in reaction and I cannot attribute it the lanes I hit the ball(s) for 10 seconds or so each side.

Same as you: subjective impression. I rather clean my equipment, and just make surface refreshments when I notice a true track area, or when a sheen/matte ball still shines after I wipe it with Lanemasters cleaner. I mostly only to a minimum touch-up, though, no true resurfacing, that's just a measure I take when I feel that minor things won't help and there's something more basically wrong than just a worn surface.

I don't think I have done any major resurface yet on many of the balls. It's likely because I freshen them freshen it up periodically. I extract oil from them periodically as well with my home made extractor.

Even though you/we refresh balls on a regular schedule, still lane wear does change the surface, especially on very fine surfaces. Wether or not your surface is a 500/4000 or a 500/1000/2000/4000 sequence, you should do a resurface from scratch every 30 - 50 games depending on the wear.
Since you do regular oil extraction, it might be a good idea to do the total resurface at the same time.
Several months ago, someone from Rotot-Grip came here and said their newest covers should be refreshed every 7 - 10 games.

I will keep that in mind. I have noticed some balls really reacting differently and it might be time for a resurface. I will have to wait because my spinner is making noise and I will have to send it back to see what the problem is.
