Ever put up an air ball?
« on: May 27, 2003, 07:53:58 PM »
Hey everyone,

This weekend was another in a long line of fantastic Amateur Bowlers Tour experiences for me. The Chicagoland Open took place at Lombard Lanes this passed weekend, first prize of 10K. Anyhow, come out and bowl a qualifying squad and bang to the tune of +37. I missed one easy spare in three games, chopped the 6-10, and left three splits, two of which were on balls that hit my mark, go figure. Anyhow, Sunday night rolls around and I'm still about 10 pins short of the cut. Feeling that I threw the ball well and that I just caught a few bad breaks, I went back in to try to get in during the final qualifying squad. Mind you, the condition was pretty worked over, two or three squads had bowled on it since it had been oiled, so the shot was not exactly fresh. However, there was a shot to be had. Anyhow, I went out there and threw the ball as bad as I can remember throwing in the last year. I couldn't hit my mark to save my life. I pulled shots, turned my shoulders, didn't stay down at the line. Basically, everything that a bowler can do poorly, I did. I'm not really sure why this happened. I've been bowling very well this year, and it just surprises me that such a horrible day came up out of nowhere. Anyone else ever throw up an air ball like this? For the sake of your sanity, I hope you haven't. lol.

I had a night in league this past year where I left 8 splits and 5 washouts and ended up at something like 456 for the night.  By halfway through the third game I wanted to hide.  I was ready to fake an injury just so I could leave.  It was so tremendously, sublimely awful that I was just certain that people must be thinking that I was sandbagging.  That thought was even worse than the actual bad bowling.

Hey, thanks for reminding me!  Don't do it again, okay?

This last weekend. 6 games on Saturday, 6 on sunday. I started with a 248 the first game. Didn't see the high side of 180 again till the last game at 189. The SAD part was that I was throwing the ball well, but just couldn't carry. Sunday - first game 179, second 180 - in both games, I missed solid/light pocket ONCE. Picked up my spares - the 179 had a pocket 4-6-7, the 180 a 7-10. I was losing points - one of them to 5 brooklyns in a row. Kinda ticks you off...
I didn't average 180 for the weekend. And I didn't miss many spares. Yikes.

Many times over here. Two years ago first night of league, shot 258 the first game, 227 the second game, then suddenly left 7 splits in the third game (missed by a board or two and got no breaks what so ever) and ended up shooting 118 for the third. Thought I had an easy 7, barely broke 6 for the night.
Had another night where I was pounding the pocket and kept leaving 7 pins. Switched balls, 7 pin. Adjusted back and forth on the approach...7 pin. Total of 14 of 'em in 3 games. Of course my 7 pin shooting stinks up the place so I missed I think 9 of them and dont think I broke 500 that night.
On the other hand I had one night where it was the opposite. Found a good line in practice, ended up shooting 156 first game with 5 splits. Either the oil broke down that fast or I was doing something wrong. Anyways, moved out 5 boards and switched to a weaker ball, and went 244, 279 (9 pin, no drive). What a cruel game.....

If I could only pick up a 7 pin.....

A couple months ago I went 267 - 149.  Where did the shot go?  Beats me!  I adjusted but just could not carry if I had a dumptruck.  Spares were an adventure.  It happens...

Yeah I get some horrible nights where I just cannot pick up a spare to save my life.  But i go practice throwing spares before or after and I cant miss!  I hate that.  So im taking the summer off and hopefully I will be coming back with a clear head and better spare making.
