Short Pin
« on: June 05, 2003, 07:42:03 AM »
I have a friend who is just getting back into bowling after 10 years away from the sport. He bought a new ball. It was an Erase-it. I told him he had made a great choice, as I feel the Erase-it is a very good ball. I went bowling with him for the first time tonight. The ball has about a quarter inch pin to cg. Both are pretty much grip center. No weight hole. The ball flares about 1.5 inches and rolls early. Hit is mushy for this guy who has very minimal hand at this point. He didn't even know what a pin or cg is when he bought the ball. Do you guys feel he was ripped off. Most bowlers with minimal hand want to put the pin in a more dynamic position.
Should the pro shop guy have pointed out this short pin and explained to my friend that he would probably be better off with a leveraged pin and longer pin to cg distance?
All thoughts are welcome.

As a low rev stroker I personally prefer a shorter pin. The shorter pin allows for a nice smooth reaction that harkens back to my Urethane days.

With a strong reactive like the Erase-it & the short pin it should feel a bit more comfortable and familiar to a person who hasn't done much bowling since reactives came into their prime.

Just my personal opinion. If it's hitting mushy, hit it with a touch of polish & he should have a great control ball.

What leverage?
The pin is roughly 4.5 inches from pap and over 2 inches below the finger holes.
I would never accept such a drilling for myself. I feel it largely takes the core out of play. Weaker handed players need all the help from the core they can get!!

Woah, that is a really bad drilling for him.

I dont think that the pin length is your issue. That thing is drilled like a
spare ball for crying out loud!

Throw the pin up above and just to the right of the ring finger & I think he would be much happier. I just dont know the implications of drilling a ball like that with such a short pin.

Unless the top weight is really low you can't drill a ball with this short a pin with pin by ring and keep the statics legal. That is why I feel my friends been taken. He's not pchee2, he needs the ball to do some work for him!

Unless the pro shop knew how the guy tracks he was taking a big chance putting the pin that low.  It would definitely flare over the finger holes for a high tracker like myself.

It sounds like the shop was conservative with him.  They probably had no idea about how he bowls and he probably didn't know what questions to ask and what to tell them.  The game has changed in recent years and many of the old ways of doing things have changed.  I'm not fond of really short pins myself but you would need to know what to ask for.  Now he knows and can go back and tell them.

You might look at the ball really good.  Most of time when I see that short of a pin the ball is an X-Out or Blem.  He might not have been made aware if it is.  If he wasn't I'd take it back quickly.

My Dad who also just got back into bowling after about 15 years has an Eraser Boost with the most Pin in location ever and has a GREAT looking ball reaction. The ball was drilled off center just enough to have 1/2oz positive side weight and it works awesome with his style. 14-15mph and very little finger lift, just makes a nice smooth move around the ball as thumb is coming out that give him about 45° of axis rotation. Ball goes long and makes a nice move to crush the rack. So to answer your question. No I do not think he got ripped, he got a ball that will be more controllable and not be so speed, accuracy, and release sensitive.
