Revisit Arc/Flip
« on: April 28, 2004, 01:55:45 AM »
I know we've discussed this recently...but I want to bring it up again if you don't mind

My arsenal consists of arcs and hook-set layouts...only one is fairly flippy. Once again,....is it OK to have a mostly arcy arsenal with a piece that doesn't necessarily "skid-flip" but has a better entry angle nonetheless to fill that spot.

In other words, does it HAVE TO SKID-FLIP ...or can it just give you a 'better' entry angle ?

thoughts.......

thanks Bob, that is what I was looking for.....

will hard arc, or just a stronger entry angle do the job instead of a literal 'skid-flip'?

Hey Jeff,

IMHO, for the average tweener, the true concept of skid flip is very difficult to execute, let alone comprehend.  What I mean is that if you drill a ball that can literally hook like Robert Smith's ball in the backend, your average tweener will never be able to use it because he/she won't understand the true angle it takes to throw that ball.  That's why some balls that end up being  skid/flip are labeled as O/U because we simply can't throw them accordingly.  This is why the strongest motion we tend to like is the strong arc as Bob has mentioned and usually that is enough.

There are always exceptions of course because I saw one show where Randy was talking about the ball reaching 48-50 ft before it made it's change of direction...?  Not me bud, I can't even see that far, let alone trust a ball to react from there...

IMO arcing balls are more playable over a broader number of conditions/houses and much more easy to off the end of a fresh pattern. However I feel there is a certain "hit" that comes from skid/flip drilled balls that cannot be matched by a strong arcing ball. My skid/flip ball happens to be a Silver Streak Pearl and this ball is great when I have to get deep or when playing the bank from the extreme right (1,2,3 board). I really have to get around this ball to get it to push far enough right and to delay the flip. IMO reactive pearls drilled to flip are very diffucult to get lined up with as they lend themselves to over/under moreso than other equipment. But if I can get lined up I shoot big numbers 750+ with the SSP. The hard part is getting lined up.
