Hey Scott. I've been around. Just no time to post anything anymore with being married and work of course. Oh wait, married is work.
Pin. (and Lefty) I know everyone is different. I work in a pro shop, and what we use is similar to what you describe. However, from talking to several people out there, it seems as though there may be some different thoughts out there. Thus the question.
Most of what I asked hinged from a problem I had when playing inside of 5th arrow. I had a bad habit of squeezing the ball, thus lofting it more than I wanted to. Of course that turned into splits. Well, after I was done, I was inquisitive(as always) about pitches and how people do different things to the ball. After talking to several people, I found that a common thread was that none of those people had more than 1/8 reverse pitch. Some even had an 1/8 forward. Two of them said the reason is so they don't have to squeeze hardly at all and therefore the ball rolls easier off their hand due to not as much pressure holding on. They mentioned it allows them to get the ball down the lane easier as well.
I have 3/8 reverse in my thumb and was wondering if I should try to decrease this to find out if this would work for me. After all, even though the owner of the shop has been around for 35+ years, there is always new info to learn. Just wondered if this was a new thought out there in the pro shop world.
As for my standings in the tourney, not good. I have bowled a lot of tourneys, but let me tell you, nothing like this. Only the Super Hoinke comes close. I actually threw a lot of strikes, and only missed four makable spares. If it wasn't for the many, many( and I mean many) splits I had, I actually would have done well for my first time. I just need to learn to play that far inside with more consistency as to release. It wasn't necessarily that I missed my target, but the release was off. We bowled on pattern C1.
I actually started around second arrow, but I had to keep it tight. If I missed right at all, then it was 2 - 10 city. So, I moved into where others were playing, but due to the issues I stated, I didn't fair much better. I would get a double, then split. Strike, then split. Heck, the last game, I started with the front four and only shot 186. See what I mean.
Oh well, it was a good experience and one that I will no doubt do again. At least the tourney part, not the bad bowling.
Oh, and John, your favorite should be a knuckle ball the way you throw yours.
Gotcha.
