Thumb Pitches
« on: October 04, 2004, 04:32:58 AM »
Hey all,

Without going into too much detail, this weekend I bowled in my first regional(did poorly by the way) and had some conversations with some better players about thumb pitches.  Anyway, from those conversations, I was thinking about changing pitches.  Just to gain myself some consistent understanding, what pitches do you have for your thumb???

Thanks in advance.

mrteach3--Good to see you post.  I use 1/8 right lateral and 1/8 reverse.

What pattern did you bowl on and how did you score?

I’m not sure what a survey will do for you.

Everyone is different and pitches have to be customized to you.

Currently mine are ½ rev with ¼ right pitch.

For the right handed bowlers that I have seen measure and drilled for, 80% would have 0 to ½ reverse and 0 to ¼ right pitch. But I’ve seen as much as 1 ¼” reverse to ¾” forward and ½ right to  Â¼ left.

And no the 1 ¼” reverse guy didn’t have a 6” span he had a 4 ¼”  span was a good bowlers with multiple honor scores.

Each person has a unique pitch that works for them and their release.

Tell us the nature of the conversations teach.

There has been a lot written on thumb pitches out here!

My favorite pitches used to be fastball and change up.

Hope that helps.

Hey Scott.  I've been around.  Just no time to post anything anymore with being married and work of course.  Oh wait, married is work.

Pin. (and Lefty)  I know everyone is different.  I work in a pro shop, and what we use is similar to what you describe.  However, from talking to several people out there, it seems as though there may be some different thoughts out there.  Thus the question.

Most of what I asked hinged from a problem I had when playing inside of 5th arrow.  I had a bad habit of squeezing the ball, thus lofting it more than I wanted to.  Of course that turned into splits.  Well, after I was done, I was inquisitive(as always) about pitches and how people do different things to the ball.  After talking to several people, I found that a common thread was that none of those people had more than 1/8 reverse pitch.  Some even had an 1/8 forward.  Two of them said the reason is so they don't have to squeeze hardly at all and therefore the ball rolls easier off their hand due to not as much pressure holding on.  They mentioned it allows them to get the ball down the lane easier as well.

I have 3/8 reverse in my thumb and was wondering if I should try to decrease this to find out if this would work for me.  After all, even though the owner of the shop has been around for 35+ years, there is always new info to learn.  Just wondered if this was a new thought out there in the pro shop world.

As for my standings in the tourney, not good.  I have bowled a lot of tourneys, but let me tell you, nothing like this.  Only the Super Hoinke comes close.  I actually threw a lot of strikes, and only missed four makable spares.  If it wasn't for the many, many( and I mean many) splits I had, I actually would have done well for my first time.  I just need to learn to play that far inside with more consistency as to release.  It wasn't necessarily that I missed my target, but the release was off.  We bowled on pattern C1.

I actually started around second arrow, but I had to keep it tight.  If I missed right at all, then it was 2 - 10 city.  So, I moved into where others were playing, but due to the issues I stated, I didn't fair much better.  I would get a double, then split.  Strike, then split.  Heck, the last game, I started with the front four and only shot 186.  See what I mean.    Oh well, it was a good experience and one that I will no doubt do again.  At least the tourney part, not the bad bowling.

Oh, and John, your favorite should be a knuckle ball the way you throw yours.    Gotcha.

Almost all the ones I know who put less reverse in the ball also shorten their span.

I believe if they have a proper span in the first place they wouldn’t have to shorten it unless they added a bunch of forward.

By my standards most proshop and bowlers have spans that are too long. Bill Taylor has long advocated shorter spans and less reverse. This trend has been catching in recent years.

In my case I have done two things to try and lessen the hitting up on the ball.

Lately I have put ½ reverse in the fingers. My hand is not very flexible for one and the reverse gives me less to hit up on.

Another change was to add reverse to the thumb. I found that I squeezed the ball regardless of pitch. By putting more reverse in the thumb it made the ball come off earlier and I wasn’t able to grab and hit up on the ball as much.

Especially Saturday. Really threw the ball like crap. More like a knuckle curve ball. Been a rough start this year. Even considered bowling sober!!

I think you will do better next time. Seemed like you were getting out the ball so smooth on Friday I don't know if I'd change anything. Maybe grab an old ball and toss in a diff slug or 2 if you want experiment.

Good Luck.

Thanks Pin,

It was just interesting to me the differences I found in other people.

And John,

That was what I was thinking about doing.  Just an old ball to play around with.  Won't change until then, if ever.

I have 1/2 inch FORWARD.
I don't think any of the good bowlers that I coach have any reverse pitch in thier thumb..most are forward.

Bowl great!

partner

from the friends i know that have been on tour or went out.

they all said shot execution was key, more than hitting mark(they do hit that also).

repetitive

that being said
most have decrease pitch for most the same reason you stated.

grabbibg it, having one or two less rev, htting up on the ball-all result in desent shot on a house shot(especially as easy as your house is  )

but will not work well on pba and sport shot patterns

good luck-make small changes first and experiment
