Homemade ball oven

I got this idea from someone over at bowlingboards.com, and figured I could try it for cheap.

I bought a used food dehydrator on Craigslist for $20. This thing puts out a steady stream of low heat and a fan circulates the air.

Then I lined a planter with tinfoil to insulate it. No cost for the foil or the planter, which I already had.

I tested it first on a garbage ball sitting in my basement, and then did the real thing.

It's very simple: put the ball on the dehydrator tray, put the foil-lined planter over it, and let it sit for a half hour. When I come back and pull it out, the ball is covered with oil. Check out the pics if you don't believe me.

The nice thing is the ball gets warm, but not too hot to touch.

Then I simply spray it down with a simple green/rubbing alcohol mix, wipe it with a clean towel, rotate it, and put it back in for another half hour. Everything's sweated out by then.

The true test came when I took my T-Road Pearl to the lanes, and it had it's old reaction back.

You can't beat this for $20!

Great Idea. Lately I've been thinking about building some type of reviver but the problem was always heat control. Looks like you found something that will work. Well, off to get a dehydrator on EBay. Thanks for the idea.

Say Doug, do you have a brand name and model#? It's hard to tell the diameter and if the fan is in the top or bottom from the pics on ebay. Thanks.

I bought a Waring.  The fan is on the bottom, which I think is standard in these things.  Some of the fancier ones have temperature controls too.

The problem with the model I bought is the diameter is 13.5 inches.  That is a non-standard size for buckets and pots (it's easy to find 12 and 14 inches), so I needed to add some weatherstripping to the bottom of the pot to make a tight seal when I drop the pot on.  The original I saw on at bowlingboards.com had a 12 inch diameter, because he used a standard 5-gallon bucket on top and got a good seal.  Just something to keep in mind before you purchase.

I got thinking: What about using a round cooler(like the red and yellow Igloo coolers) and intergrating the dehydrator (or something along that line) into it.  

It's a cooler, so its insulated already, eventhough its plastic, it shouldn't melt(shouldn't <-keyword).  Plus its definitely big enough, I think, for a bowling ball.

Just a thought...

Interesting idea.  This thing doesn't put out enough heat to melt it...  the original cover that came with it is made of plastic.

I baked another ball last night and it sweated oil for an hour.  Since I picked it up used, I imagine it'll be a different ball than when I bought it!

I tried this with a Ronco dehydrator and a set of expansion rings.I just cut the middle part of the rings out and stacked them on there just high enough to clear the ball,and it works perfect.The temp. inside only gets to 133F(checked with infared therm.).The ronco I picked up on ebay for 19 with shipping and the expansion rings for 9 so for 28 bucks i got my own ball oven.
