I used to be a skid flip player will all my movement on the backend.. I feel I have to be almost perfect as far as pocket position and angle to carry...I have recently changed my game to be alittle smoother but still most of the movement on the backend.. just a smoother break point.. I feel I might be getting a little better carry. I know 4 -6 degrees at the 17.5 board is the optimum for strikes ...
I'm wondering what do you think works best for overall carry and gives you the widest "pocket"

You need equipment that will read the midlane more. Skid/flip is not the answer anymore unless you need the extra push. You will just end up leaving alot of corner pins to shoot at. Equipment that will clear the front part of the lane, start revving in the midlane, and still conserve something for the backend part is optimal. Balls are laid out based on your ball speed and rev rate, so once you get those down pat, half the battle is already over. If there is any amount of oil in the first 35 feet, you have to have midlane roll or expect 9 counts all night.

After looking at your specs in your signature, you will most likely want pin placements between 4 and 5 inches. 4 inches wil give you alot of midlane roll and 5 inches will give you more push and backend without sacrificing midlane read. If you go beyond the 5 inches, you risk that skid/flip reaction. Personally, I LOVE 4 1/2 pin drillings because it gives me a good medium between early roll and skid/flip. Enough push through the heads with strong backend continuation. Strong, but not flippy. If it gets flippy, I knock the shine off a little to tame it down.

Almost everything I used to throw was 5.5 and over..I have a sidewinder at 4" that seems to work pretty well but I also don't seem to do well with it if I can't get that "backend" out of it. I have a 5" no mercy whupn that I really liked when I first got it .. I could see it start up sooner and continue on the back.. lately I just can't get it to work..

It seems like whenever a ball starts up early it just goes too heavy but then if I give it room it doesn't have the backend to get back to the pocket and carry.

Jw73. Our styles are very similar. I have a high track as well 5 3/4 x 1/2^. This alone makes for a drill sensitive nature, we cover alot of the ball and then add that our rev rates are 350-375 we have a heavy strong roll. I don't have a bunch of tilt I stay behind the ball alot more than than I used to, but can go around it by tucking my pinky.

What I have noticed is I cn not drill equipment very strong. High performancer equipment stays in the 5 inch to 6 inch range, mid performance doesn't go below 4 1/2. I tend to drill 90% of my stuff pin up, but at varying heights according to my midline. Pin downs as of late have been very condition specific, typically rolling to early unless on the perfect condition. My two favorite balls have drulls of a 6 inch inch to PAP high diff ball. astrong particle with a 5 to 5 1/4 pin up as well. They compliment each other well

I would say if your style is similar to mine stay away from 4 inch to PAP's, for us that means to much burn to early, causing problematic carry unless on lots of oil. It really is just trial and error though.

This is one half of a "good" shot, and you need the proper timing of the ball''s reaction to maximize the momentum it carries with the core. A good entry angle won''t be effective when you do not get the ball into its final forward roll phase. If you manage to "tune" the skid/hook/roll transition so that the ball just gets into its stable end roll a moment before it enters the pins (at the right angle to take away the 5 pin), this is what I''d consider a good shot with a very high strike probability.

What the break point looks like or which line you actually play won''t tell much, because this is dictated by the lane condition, the ball you use and its layout. Just how it finishes actually counts, and that''s why watching the ball''s reaction throughout the lane and the pin deck is so vital. Anything else is IMHO clueless tossing, and an occasional good match-up of the factors.

exactly know what you are saying.. all my strong stuff just burns up.. it doesn't hook too much or even too early.. just burns up and has nothing at all left for the backend.. I think this is why I developed my higher degree of rotation and usually go with higher pins as well..

right now I am using the strength of the ball for how much backend I need... going to weaker stuff if I need more and strong stuff if I need to play straighter...
