Having trouble projecting the ball out
« on: May 23, 2013, 05:50:42 AM »
Just getting back into bowling after a while being outta it...

Got in a fun league last night with my wife just to get back into the swing of things and holys**t I had a terrible time. Sure I was rusty as heck , but no matter what I did I just couldn't get a consistent roll on the ball and I kept tugging for Brooklyn hits.

I tried opening up my feet and my body at the line and I tried to hold my elbow closer to my body, nothing was helping at all.

I had a ball fresh cut yesterday with mu current span, pitches and sizes so I know the specs are on.

Any advice ?

After a long layoff, it is usually timing that is the first to go.  Check your footwork.  Make sure your steps are not too long or too fast.  Check to be sure your swing plane is straight and you are not swining the ball around your body.
Pick up Mark Bakers book, the Game Changer.  It will give you some great advice, no matter what your style.  Good Luck and Have fun!

Several friends often have this trouble later during the night or when they're tired.
Many times, on the step where they get the ball into motion (I don't dare say, "pushaway" any more or someone will rip me a new one! :() they're either not getting the ball in motion or their tiredness makes them drop the ball towards their feet, instead getting it forward and in front of their shoulder. So the armswing/ball is behind their feet, with respect to their timing.

Another strong possibility is you're not putting the ball into motion towards your line (Your targeting line is the line through 3 points: your laydown point, your target on the lane, usually near the arrows and your breakpoint.) Combined with getting the ball in motion at the right time, this could easily be the cause of the ball going inside of where you intended.

As others have suggested, look at your footwork first.  Your slide foot should be pointing the direction you are trying to roll the ball.  Why?  Because your hips are going to open (or close) accordingly.

It would be very difficult to try to throw the ball "against" the direction your hips and feet are facing mainly because it would be very inconsistent.  You may hit your target every so often if they are mis-aligned, but your foundation will always be your feet and legs/hips, so pay attention to what they are telling you.

This is an often overlooked area with amateur bowlers, but the great bowlers and professionals know exactly what is going on down there.  This advice also assumes your timing is pretty good.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I'm going to work on some things tomorrow with a couple games. For the most part, my slide foot is pretty much pointing straight and not towards my target.. lol

I'm a take a video tomorrow so I can get a clearer picture on exactly what's going on

hi, not knowing your footwork or anything,I drift in my approach and to combat this I was reading and watching other bowlers and it was recommended that the second step in the approach be a cross step which keeps you in line with the target and I noticed that this also helps in projecting the ball to the right. When I walk straight I throw straighter and am more likely to pull if I am off with my timing, but when I do the Cross step I drastically reduce my propensity for pulling and my projection is right. If I vary the step over I change the amount of projection. More step left more throw right. Just my two cents, good luck.

Nice tip ... Makes sense ... I will have to try that the next time I bowl.

Also might pay attention to your alignment as far as shoulders go. I noticed when I first came back after a 7-8 year lay off that I was dropping my shoulder, or rather leaning way over and this was causing me to try to over compensate and throw  the ball left. I started working on that and keeping my shoulders more open and suddenly things started rolling like they should.

As they said though foot work and timing was also pretty bad too. Another thing too was that I was very stiff feeling, and was kind of scared of the slide, it just wasnt feeling right. Eventually I just said the heck with it and pushed all the stuff I had been working on for several days out of mind and just started throwing, rolled a 216  ;D
