Question On Index & Pinky Finger Positions
« on: January 31, 2006, 02:21:25 PM »
Normally when I bowl, I spread the index finger approx. 1 1/2" or so from my MF and my pinky (not folded) against my RF. Once in a while I will use the same finger position already mentioned, but with the Pinky tucked.

Today, I was struggling and decided to try pulling both the index and pinky fingers in tight against my MF & RF to see what would happen and what a difference it seemed to make. (today anyhow....lol) Anyway, I seemed to have more revs, larger hook, more angular back-end and better carry bowling this way. Is there an explaination for this? I always thought with the index extended and pinky tucked or untucked did what I got when I pulled all fingers togeather today.

What happens to all of you bowlers when you use these finger positions?

Is there any advantage to one position over another or is it a case of "to each his own?"

When your fingers are closer together you should generate more revs. I dont know why though because for some reason it doesn't work for me.  I have smaller hands so it seems when i spread my fingers i get more coverage of the ball.  I guess the reason is that you are not stretching your fingers, it relaxes your wrist, and you can get more lift. I might be totally off so someone plz disagree.

Hey Deadbait, You may have something there....Now that I think about it and you saying reducing early turn, that may be why it worked for me today. I have a problem of not getting turn soon enough and if my timing is off, I can't get around the ball at release and it goes with not much hook and with too much forward roll on it. With the fingers closed today, I was getting good turn with my late release. Does this make sense to you?

Didn't Mike Aulby bowl with all fingers closed?

My main hand and finger position is both fingers pulled close to the MF and RF.  I also tuck my pinkie finger while doing this.  This gives me a big back end and my highest revs.  If I want to tame my backend I just untuck my pinkie.  This still gives me a big backend but it's more controllable.  The reason I get more on the ball with the fingers in tight is because I tend to come up the back of the ball more.  Plus this keeps my ball track high and gives me very little tilt which gives you a great mid lane read.

You can use many different finger positions and the same release to give you all kinds of different ball reactions.  If I want more length I just spread my pointer finger.  This helps my hand come around the ball more.

I thorw straight at all of my spares.  I pull my pointer finger in close to the MF. Then I spread my pinkie out away from my RF.  this allows me to throw the ball dead straight.

Rags, I looked at it before I posted tonight and other than showing different positions with very little explaination and on some pictures no explaination, it doesn't give much information pertaining to my question of the revs, hook, leverage, etc.

chitown, it produced a big hook and backend for me today with all fingers pulled togeather and pinky not tucked, but rather than help me stay behind the ball, it helped me get around the ball to a 45 degree realease better than with index finger spread out. It may be because I have a bit of a late realease and a bit out in front of me rather than beside my sliding foot, I don't know.

As long as it works for you that's all that matters.  For me this is my main release with all fingers pulled in tight and my pinkie tucked.  I also use it with my pinkie untucked like you.  I can really rev it up and be controlled.  This release and finger position really helped me.  I decided to do it once when I was practicing and had such good results it became my normal hand and finger pistion.

My normal most comfortable hand position is Pinky snug to the RF, and index finger stretched out from the MF as far as comfortably possible. Now if im noticing the ball is reading early, usually 3rd game I will extend the pinky like i do the index finger and alas, the ball skids a little longer before it snaps. Ive tried the pinky tucking thing, I got no results different then the pinky tucked next to the RF. If I want the ball to go extra long, ill put the index and pinky snug to the RF/MF flat. Usually do this when the shot is extremely fried.
