Hot water bath
« on: February 21, 2009, 05:13:03 AM »
Would a bowling ball get ruined if I kept a ball in the bucket soaking for a long amount of time? Let's say I filled it up dropped the ball in put the soap in and just let it sit.Would the oil go back into the ball? Would it oil stay on top of the water with the soap? Just curious, I want to give my bowling balls a HWB but, I don't feel like changing the water and babysitting it every 30 mins. Also, would the water fill the pores of the ball ruining it? Thanks!

once the water cools it will no longer pull the oil out of the ball. It also ma pull the oil back in. Thats why you have to "babysit" the water.

1. Place the ball into a bucket and place it under your bath tub faucet.

2. Run your hot water until it turns cold at which time you take the ball out of the bucket, wipe it off and your done!

3.  This is the best hot water bath process to use.  This process keeps new hot water going into the bucket the entire time.  The oil will float to the top and out of the bucket into the drain.  This keeps the oil from being absorbed back into the balls cover.

4.  Placing a ball into a bucket of hot water and just letting it soak is not as good as what I described above.  The trick is to keep the water hot.  You can't keep the water hot just letting it sit in bucket.

Hope this helps.

After the bucket fills, should I let the water run slowly?

I do. Just enough to stay hot, and overflow the floating oil from the surface. I also put on a rubber glove (can't take the heat),reach into the water, and rub the oil from the surface of the ball occasionally.

I prefer just water, no soap.

I let the water run full blast.

Another thing I do is bring my coverstock down to 500 grit before giving it a hot water bath.

I would also do this several times through out the day to really get the oil out.  3 times usually does the trick for me.  The only thing that sucks about doing this is waiting for my hot water tank to heat back up. lol

I also don't tape up any of the holes in my bowling balls as the water WILL NOT ruine the ball.

I've always had great success using the hot water bath method I described. I use the hot water bath when the bowling ball hits about 100 games and then do it every 50 games after that.

Another thing you could consider getting is a revivor.  Its a ball oven that does a great job of xtracting oil from the covers.  Not sure what it costs but it's another option to consider if you plan on bowling for many years to come.

How long would the ball take to dry out? If I did this at say 4:30pm EST could I use it in a 9pm league tonight? Oh would I have to take out the tape and replace it as well?

Just throw it in your dishwasher if you've got one and turn off the "dry" function.  Works better than a bucket and no babysitting needed.
