Hot Water Treatment
« on: July 26, 2006, 07:38:31 PM »
Ok, I know this was posted somewhere else on how to use this to clean a bowling ball, but i could not find it.  If anyone could give me the step by step procedures on how to use this type of method to clean a bowling ball i would greatly appreciate it.  I am also wondering if i should tape up the finger holes on my ball since i have finger plugs and a thumb sleeve in my ball and would want to know if the water could do anything to effect them in anyway.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Try to avoid water contact with the holes in your ball...It can seep in and damage the core (from what I hear) What you wanna do is

1) Fill a sink or bucket with hot (not boiling/scalding) water
2) put the ball in (I use a towel in the bottom of the sink to hold the track in the water)
3) Add a dishwashing soap/detergent
4) Leave for 15-20 mins (some people leave it in for 30)
5) Take out and wipe ball clean
6) repeat until no oil comes out of the ball.

That is what I do, some people will say other things, and are welcome to reply (I might change/learn something new)

As far as I can tell, this is not necessary - unless you want to stay with tape in the holes after a bath in the bucket (*yuck*). IMHO most important is to avoid hard temperature shocks. Do not to the ball what you cannot stand with your bare hands, and you should be fine. Otherwise, I fully subscribe to ebolanebowler's procedure.

I don't open the pores with wet sanding. You should also buy the rubber gloves that go up past the wrist ($2 for two pairs at Walmart. While you're there, pick up a 5 gallon bucket for $6). The water is/should be hot from the tap.

At first I was cutting plastic grocery bags to stuff in the holes, but on the second and subsequent cleanings I didn't bother. I have Magic Carpets in mine so I try to time it with when I replace them.

Do not use hot water from the stove.  Use it from the tap and be sure to be able to at least get your hands in it.  I have pictures of a Rotogrip ball that cracked all over the place because of hot water bathes.

So basically from what I am reading it really wouldnt matter if the finger holes got water in them or i should go ahead and cover them with something that would not let water in them?

Thanks for all the help with this guys, ima be doing it in about 2 hours.

In addition to the treatment described above I've also used the dishwasher.  USE THE LOW TEMP SETTING!!!  Seemed to work quite well.  MAKE SURE YOUR WIFE/SIG. OTHER IS GONE!!!!  (that is unless you have a tolerant sig. other.)

I just place the ball in a bucket in a way that allows me to fill it up to just below the gripping/balance holes. I tried a couple of different ways to seal them but it didn't work very well so I started doing it this way. The core can soak up water and cause undesirable consequences IMHO. The first that comes to mind is illegal statics and I almost always treat all my equipment to a bath before a tourney. I sure would hate to have them weigh illegal due to a bit of water soaking into the core.

See above.
low heat setting
no heat drying
tape over the holes
tad of detergent
shortest cycle.

I use the blue or green painters tape from 3M with duct tape over that to cover the finger holes. It keeps the water out and is easy to remove w/o sticky residue. My hands can stand 145 degree water but I soak my equip in 100-125 degree water.

Ok, well I just did this to my zone classic, and i followed each step correctly and the water was not really really hot, but it was warm, I put my ball in the bucket, then put in some Dawn and washed it around a little bit, after the time was up, i rinsed it out, and then put the ball back in for another 20 minutes as it said to do from the morich site.  I then took the ball out and noticed that there was a discoloration to my ball, it had turned slighty white all the way around the ball, now i dont know if this is any concern to how the ball may react, but i want to know if i have done something wrong or what has happened and if it was cleaned properly.

It has happened to my Strike Zone when I left it in too long, which is what you did. It's just soap, it'll come off.

Some balls do that - they look like they were bleached.  Doesnt effect the ball.

Just clean it with some bowling ball cleaner or simple green and all of it will come off eventually and have NO effect on the ball.
