House shot vs PBA or Sport Shot
« on: May 02, 2010, 11:59:23 PM »
Hi All,
I recently wrote the following article:
http://tamerbowling.com/index.php/house-shot-vs-pba-or-sport-shot/

I usually get a ton of questions about this topic, especially from beginners and non-bowling athletes.  I thought I would take the time to explain this topic in simpler terms and getting progressively more complicated.

Let me know if you think the article is useful.  Feel free to share it with friends and others who ask this question.

It's amazing how many 215 house bowlers can only muster a 160 or so on a PBA shot...

Happy reading.

I bowled on the Shark pattern on Saturday and averaged 180 and later that night in league I averaged 150 on a house pattern. That there doesn't make any sense.

There's quite a bit of upper house bowlers who don't have spare balls or who's spare game leaves alot to be desired. I see so many guys hook it into single pins it's not even funny. Every night I see the 4, 7, 8 all get hooked into by righties, opposite for lefties. A ball such as a white dot takes that pattern out of the equation by throwing straight. I wonder how many of those 215 house bowlers still try to hook out for spares...

I'm a 215-220 guy (not that it matters), but I'll hook the ball into all left side spares on a THS.

On sport patterns and tournaments, if difficult enough to cross the lane...i'll throw plastic.

Really doesn't matter to me, all about adjusting to the conditions, the conditions dont adjust to you.

Same here.  In fact.  I'm working on throwing plastic at all spares-including THS patterns.

I see what you are saying and I was the same way. But throwing plastic across lane and straight at spares, always takes the condition out of play and enables me to be more consistant as I am not changing my starting position, hand/release, etc for different patterns.

How is it amazing? If that's all a house hack bowls on is a house shot they form bad habits and are only used to bowling on that lane pattern..
If given the opportunity to bowl on a PBA shot on a daily basis then yes 215 bowlers could hit that shot.. But all PBA bowlers can shoot 160 on those patterns as well, so it's not limited to just house hacks.. You have your good games and your bad games.. 1 game doesn't lose you the tournament during qualifying when there are multiple games to go..

Yeah, for me personally sport short or PBA experience leagues are worthless unless they are at least 7 games. How are you supposed to get the true experience if you are bowling half the games and dealing with half the transition. Nevermind a league that forces you to jump right after every game. I was fortunate to bowl in a center that ran a "real" PBA experience league and it was quite the learning experience.

In the end the PBA is just the worlds largest travel league.

2010 is the first time joining a league since 1999.  Over a 10 year lay off and haven't lost much of my game.   This year currently HG-279, HS-733.

Hello.  The amazing part is how humbling it is for a house bowler who thinks they are really good bowlers to get away from a house shot and find it extremely difficult. I see a lot of young kids (young and old alike) who really think they are fantastic bowlers but when it comes right down to it, there are lacking fundamentals.  It's not to put anyone down, it's just good to be humble and sometimes accept that you don't always know what you don't know.  It's a learning opportunity.

Yes, that's my excuse when I don't bowl well on PBAx  No, seriously though, I tend to agree.  Most PBAx leagues I believe are only a handful of games on any given night (at least locally).  Mine is max 5 games head to head.  Fresh PBA shots are pretty difficult, even for Pros.  You tend to see scores get better as the shot breaks down and you get more room.  The difference is still that a house shot has up to 10 boards of room where a broken down PBA shot may still only have 3 boards.  As somebody said, you don't lose a tournament from 1 or 2 bad games, especially if the tournament is 10 or more games on pinfall.

I'm no pro on THS but I finally get to roll on some PBA shots this summer if the league actually gets enough people.  I have no idea how I'll bowl, but I'm not expecting anything wonderful!
