Rules question on using cleaners
« on: February 03, 2010, 04:11:00 PM »
Just a quick question regarding USBC rules for using approved cleaners.  Is it okay to use an approved cleaner during a game on the ball that you have been using in that game and are continuing to use in that game?

I thought it was okay, but maybe I'm wrong.  During league tonight, about the middle of the 3rd game, my ball was looking pretty bad from belt marks and general lane dirt as the lanes were getting pretty dry, so I used some Remedy cleaner to give it a quick clean before the next frame.  Shortly afterwards, another member of my team pulled me aside and told me that it was illegal to clean the ball during a game, that you could clean it before and/or after the match (or game?), but not during the game itself.  So, what exactly is the rule for using approved cleaners?

Approved cleaners are legal during use for USBC sanctioned leagues but NOT at Natl's.

Do you know how many old timers say that? A lot. Many of them don't actually know the rules. It's just what they hear over times gone by.

You are allowed to use cleaners approved "for use during competition". That's why that category is named that way. "DURING COMPETITION"! Print it off in big bold letters and shove it under their nose next time you see them.

Thanks, everyone.  That's just what I thought.  I'll definitely be printing the pertinent rules out and showing my team-mate so that he'll be aware of the actual rules.  He was absolutely sure that he was right and wouldn't even consider that I knew what I was talking about, but now we'll both know for sure.
