Ball Drilled Like Norm Duke

Has anyone had a ball drilled like Norm Duke?  If so, how did it feel?  Did the ball roll differently?

If by drilled like Norm Duke you mean with 3 holes that your fingers and thumb go in we all have...lol :)

No what exactly do you mean?  He doesn't do anything that different with his grip.

Except you don't want to see Norm's thumb hole. I saw a test ball he used at Kegel and his thumb is almost triangular. It boggled the mind, but when one bowls as many games for as long as he has, that's bound to happen. now I know why he futzes with his tape SO much.

Also, Norm not only doesn't use grips, but he doesn't put any bevel on his holes! At the Storm booth last year in Reno, they had one drilled ball from each of their staffers on a display so you could see their grips, and it literally hurt to pick up Norm's ball because the edges of the holes were so sharp.

I asked what specifically because I used to do my thumbhole and grips like Norm...inspired by what I saw him do.

The fingers are sharp to keep you from grabbing at it...if you pinch it at the bottom...you get immediate feedback.  If you bowl a block where you keep grabbing it...your fingers will be very sore the next day.

As far as the thumb...it's a way of getting the feedback of a sharp hole, but w/o the penalty of hanging up in it if you happen to grab one.  You take a rasp and work out the to of the hole, keeping the edge sharp but creating some bevel so the thumb can clear it.  This was a great way to help you stay relaxed in the ball, but not embarass yourself when you didn't throw one pure.

Great points, Russell! I didn't think about that, but it makes perfect sense. I don't think I could pull it off, but no feedback means a clean release.

Very good points Russel, and not trying to sound like i'm better or anything because its all preference, I drill my finger holes and that is it, I don't bevel them at all, its just how I prefer it.

Norm Duke used to live here in OK, and practiced at Blvd Bowl in Edmond which is where I bowled at the time. He said the purpose of the sharp edges on the holes was to keep him from squeezing the ball, saying that if a person squeezes the ball that has sharp edges, "he's going to immediately know he squeezed it".

Yeah I did it for a couple of years.  I only switched to try something different, and it's not a matter of right and wrong, just some different ways of getting it done :)

Great article here on Norm Duke's layout that also addresses his lack of bevel:  http://www.kegel.net/library/foArticles.asp?iKodYazi=43
