Second shift ball choice
« on: March 26, 2009, 04:37:33 PM »
Im looking for a ball that is going to clear the fronts nice and allow me to creatate angle. Were on Hpl9000 second shift after a tavern league, the bowlers in the league some times use plastic, or reactive depending on what pair you get. Right now my arsenal looks like.
???? Something like a Cell or V/G
Dimension 5 x 4 x 4 Whole down In MB ( pin under ring )
HY-road 5 x 4 x 4 whole down VAL 2 1/2 ( pin under ring )
??
Street rod 5 x 5 1/2 No extra hole cg is near grip center.
Avalanche Slide 5 3/4 x 5 No extra hole. (good for dry lanes but not inside)

Was considering
 T-road Pearl
Rapid Fire Pearl
Rapid fire Solid with a long pin to pap

I normally bowl on a lot of pba type condtions, whare control is more vital then angle. But now i need to fill this gap ??

Any info is great !

T-Road Pearl is what I was thinking before I even saw your list.  Rapid Fire may work, but I doubt it if your Hy-Road doesn't.

I was also thinking T-Road Pearl before I saw your list, and especially after I saw you have the Hy-Road.  I also bowl second shift, and my T-Road Pearl reads the lanes beautifully, all the way through three games.  If you like your Hy-Road, stick with the TRP because it has the same core.  And it's so easy to control...

Depending on how the TRP is rolling, I also use my Cherry Vibe.  Pretty much play the same line, although the Vibe can handle less oil without having to move so many boards left.

Arsenal:
Columbia 300 Rival
Storm T-Road Pearl
Hammer Cherry Vibe
Lane #1 Bullet
Columbia 300 White Dot - Blue Pearl

T-road pearl my choice too because it has a good core unlike most drier lane balls.
--------------------
Storm Hyroad 1 2000 abralon(benchmark ball)
Storm Hyroad 2 4000 polished
Storm Second Dimension
Storm T-road Pearl

Spit_Fire,

How do they typically break down for you? I'm also on HPLs for my league and I have a suggestion depending on how they're transitioning.

jess,

Normally, depending on pair, start around 15 at the arrows out to about 10 the first game, Thats my starting line if there is enough oil. We bowl four games, so by the end of the night im usually into 20 at the arrows out to 13 then i cant kick the tens out

Spit_Fire,

There have been some good suggestions in this thread already, and looking at your arsenal, you're already drilling balls fairly weak (5" pin-to-PAP), so I think you've gone as far as you can go that way.

I throw a similar line as you do, and I have a similar problem that you have (i.e., oil disappearing from the track area, but can't kick the 10s out after I move in beyond a certain point).

What I did was purposefully seek out NIB balls on eBay and from sellers here that are about 5-, 10- or 15-year-old technology. For instance, a Track Threat or an Ebonite Matrix Conquest. What I found was that older balls with fresh coverstocks were just weak enough that today's oil conditions may have given them trouble, but once the shot breaks down, the lanes back up into those balls' sweet spots.

Both the T-Road Pearl and Rapid Fire Pearl are extreme backend balls, IMO. That's a great option if you like to keep moving left.

I typically will go left, left, left, and then switch to an older piece of equipment and jump back to the right. I have found it works great for me, particularly since the downlane friction already built into those HPLs will help the ball to the pocket.

The other advantage to this is that you can get a really sweet deal on older stuff. It doesn't have to be used. There are enough NIB oldies here and on eBay that you can probably find something. There are a lot of great sellers on this forum but the first one that jumps to mind for older stuff is MadMax. He also sells on eBay under a similar name (like "mad-max!!!") but I don't remember the exact spelling right now.
