i track in a ball is when the surface of the most rolled over part of the ball(the track) has been compressed and/or now has a different texture to it....ie hammer sledgehammer was 500 grit oob but with use would smooth out some(according to others as i havent thrown mine) this is since the lane can be called about 800-1000 grit shinier balls get dull and dull balls get shiny.

On a polished ball, I'd expect that the polish would start wearing off in the track area.

If you bowl on relatively new synthetics, you may never see a track develop.

I moved from a house with old wooden lanes, to one with brand-new synthetics.  Last year, on wooden lanes, a ball would pick up a noticeable track in just a few games, whereas this year, on synthetics, I haven't noticed any wear at all.
