When does a slump.......
« on: October 13, 2008, 02:10:15 AM »
When does a slump become a new standard?  My game has been struggling since around April.  In February and March I averaged around 230 in 3 leagues at two different houses.  Summer league I struggled to get 198 and it is not getting any better for the fall.  Just when I think I get something figured out something else goes wrong.  I'm all the way down to thinking my span has changed which I posted about in the drilling and layouts section.  So at what point do you stop trying to figure it out and accept that the new average really is the new average?

First break it down to whether it's the strike ball or the spare ball that's dropping your average. It may be a combination of both. If it's one or the other I would think that it's likely the lanes, equipment or both. If it's the first and second ball both causing the drop it's probably something in your delivery. Remember these are my own thoughts and without knowing how you bowl they're just guesses.

My spare shooting has actually improved by quite a bit, probably because I shoot at so many now.  I use the frames software and my strike % has dropped from around 60% to as low as 40% in July.  Spare shooting has improved by about 8%.  To put it simply I seem to have lost that "pop" on the backend to carry strikes.  No matter how much I try to increase my axis rotation I can't increase it to 45% where it used to be and everything seems to roll out.

If your balls are rolling out you might want to take one and put a less aggressive surface on it. Could be the lanes are a touch drier. Remember, the houses with computerized lane machines can change the shot very easily.

Are your balls dull or old?
"Old" these days could mean as little as 50 games on them. Today's resins absorb oil at an astounding rate and need treatment to retain their performance. That includes even polished balls.

Most balls lose their performance, hooking and hitting power, gradually over time. You often don't see it until you stop carrying strikes you used to carry. What you describe seems very like this, unless you've bought some new balls in the past 6 months.

They may need a rejuvenation of some sort: oil extraction, resurfacing or both.

Also have you changed drillers? That could also have a big effect on your game.

Possible other related factors: new lane surfaces, new bowling center, new oil machine, new oil man, sudden weight loss Or gain.

I have mainly been using a oob Rapid Fire Pearl and an Agent that I just picked up on Ebay.  So they are fairly new and a polished surface.  My ball speed is only in the 15.5 - 16.0 range so dull surfaces have never really worked well.  I'm thinking of taking an old fired up, plugging the thumb hole, and experimenting with span and pitches - anything to try to get some leverage back on the ball.

If anything, the Rapid Fire Pearl is stronger than the Fired Up, but on lighter oil the Fired Up may flip more for more drive at the pocket.

I had a very, very similar experience.  You might want to check to see if you are coming around the ball too early.  I became lazy in my downswing and was rotating my hand around the ball leaving a nice roll on the ball but no pop on the back end.
