abralon VS: sandpaper
« on: January 30, 2007, 04:35:59 PM »
Does ANYBODY have a conversion or equivalency chart comparing the two? In other words.... 1000 abralon = ???? sandpaper. And does water use change the comparison? Thanks for any help with this....

1000 grit Abralon = 1000 grit sandpaper.
2000 grit Abralon = 1000 grit sandpaper.
500 grit Abralon = 500 grit sandpaper.
The abrasive used, silicon carbide is identical. The only difference is the foam backing versus the wet/dry paper backing on sandpaper.

I was told the shape of the particles on the abralon pad is another... so it is better to use abralon than sandpaper...

But I am not sure about that.

Ebonite claims there is a slight difference between the texture achieved from 1000 Abralon vs. 1000 grit wet/dry sandpaper.

I don't think anything other than a machine would be able to notice the difference though.

oh, with that foam rubber backing's flexibility and ability to absorb water, it is far easier to use Abralon and easier to get a smooth finish. But it is far more expensive than just use a damp sponge as backing to sandpaper.

Abralon does have a 4000 grit level that you can get with wet/dry sandpaper, but sandpaper has many grit levels you can't get in Abralon pads.
