How do you Conquer this?
« on: February 07, 2006, 02:16:02 PM »
This is a question that is directed mainly towards regional pros or really good bowlers as a whole.
(my story)
You walk into the lanes smelling the fresh scent of lane oil on the lanes.  It's 9 o clock in the morning and your league is about to start.  you unpack your stuff, and roll a few practice shots.  everything is feeling great.  Your mark is perfect and the ball is Carrying no matter where you put it in the pocket.  You start bowling for score, and you start stringing the strikes.  (you've shot 300 before so you don't think a whole lot about it), you get to 9 or 10 in a row.  Crowd starts gathering.  roll the 11th one, perfect!..  last shot you roll, another perfect shot and you roll 300.  Now this is the first game of the day and you know that you still have 2 more games ahead of you.  So you try not to get overly excited about the 3.  You have everyone comming up to you asking to shake your hand and everything,  You kind of just want everyone to go away so that you can just concentrate on your bowling again, but you don't want to be rude and refuse to shake their hand.  You start the next game and get a couple strikes, and here your only 2-3 frames into the game and you hear people behind you saying, "well here we go again", or asking you if your going for 3 again or the all out best question "you going to shoot 900?"  you go up on the next shot and trying not to think about what everyone has been saying you roll your shot, but something is wrong and either you don't hit pocket or you just flat out don't carry.

Now, for those of you who have rolled multiple 300s in a set how do you get past these annoying onlookers and just concentrate on your game?  I know that experience has a lot to do with it, but geez, it really does get frustrating.

I usually have a slightly different problem:

"Hey, you gonna roll four in a row in the gutter again?"

I try to shrug off the congrats with "Eh I got lucky". Ive never shot 2 300s in a set. I did have 300 followed by the front 9 earlier this year. Someone asked me how many honor scores that was for this season after I shot the 300. I politely answered with the numbers and a buddy of mine said "Tack another 800 on there". I said, "We'll see, you never know what'll happen".

It is tough to keep an even keel but figure this---during your 300 you were in complete control and that is keeping your inner demons in control. Outer demons for the most part are much less affective in my mind. Yes they can be a distraction, but relax and have fun with it. Shooting an honor score is fun---so adding to it is that much more fun.

I have had 2 300s in the same set on 3 different occasions.  Although never back to back.  Sometimes, you just need to take the higher road and just say thanks and be done with it.  If you keep the energy positive, you will more than likely continue to perform positively as well.  The minute you start getting frustrated, your muscles will start to tense up and that is when you start rolling it badly.  It is mind over matter my friend.  Stay loose, stay positive.

Or you could be in my situation. Ive had the front 9 5 times this year. 1st 2 i had just bad pin carry. 4 pin (ball was high by 1 board) then a stone 8 pin. The last 3 were from amatures seeing their 1st possible perfect game. Each 1 of the last 3 front 9 games I had someone in my downswing completely yell out "YOU CAN DO IT!!!" as loud as they can. The best you can do with everything going on is just try to tune out everything to the best of your capabilities.

My top 5 games of the year:
279 (high pocket 4 pin)
279 (stone 8 pin)
278 (pulled the ball when someone yelled out you can do it)
277 (over rotated the ball when someone good shot)
276 (pulled it when someone yelled go for it)

Normally I can tune out that stuff but when its almost totally quiet its kinda harder to do.

Sounds like what I was figuring.  Its just something else that I need to work on when it comes to the mental game.  And your right shooting honor scores is just fun for one thing, but what can I say, one of my goals is to shot 2 3s in a set this year.  don't know if it will happen (actually if I bowled at Meridian Lanes it would) but its still a good goal to shoot for.  Still I probably shouldn't worry myself about something like this when I really should be worried about other things with my mental game.  In the process of coming out of a slump and it really took a beating on my mental game.  Plus it gets hard to remain positive when you are rolling a great ball in league and hitting pocket right around 95% of the time, but just not carrying.  been like that for the past 4-5 weeks for me but hey, i've Kinda gotten used to it, and now all of a sudden it seems like I'm starting to carry some crap that I haven't been carrying for a while. so who knows? maybe my luck is changing .

Thanks for all the replys guys/gals

You have two options:

1. Look at the floor on the return approach, and ignore them and strike up a conversation with someone in your setee area, or sit there quietly and focus

2. Go back and talk to the crowd like you do this every day and it's no big deal, "Hey what did you guys think of the Super bowl", just something to make them change the topic of you and to calm the situation down.

I used to do 1, but now I do 2, although I have not had multiple 300s in one set, I think it is part of the game that the crowd is going to be there when you are doing well so you might as well enjoy it because it may never happen again espescially in my case.

Since you are saying it is not your first 300 then the most important thing is to stay in your routine on the approach.

I try to separate everything that is going on off the approach from the game itself.

Once I go up to bowl I go into my routine and block everything out but what I’m trying to do that shot.

I 100% agree with Branton.  There is something to be said for positive energy.  Feed off it!!  Enjoy it!!  Sometimes, basking in the accolades of your fellow bowlers and peers is a great way to NOT think about the multiple 300's and just let the ball fly while your adrenaline and muscle memory takes over.

Or, you could just go ask Robert Mushtare............oh, sorry, there was no one around when he threw his back-to-back-to-backs.

PS just saw America's no 2 on the all time 300 list shoot 289 last night...Flush and ringing 10 pin like you couldn't belief pair next to me.  I think that would have been somewhere in the 80s for him!

Tough break for him.  Funny Bones, I may try it .  And if I could learn to feed off of it then I'm sure things would be much easier, and I guess i've got a bit of time, after all, I'm still only in Juniors.

Il Bowler, sounds like you have to start bowling with earphones.

If you know who's shouting when you're on a string, pepper spray them in the parking lot after league.
