How do you deal with carrydown?

Simple question, right?

I'm curious to know how you deal with it: ball change? More ball, less ball? Arcing vs. skid flip?  Change your line? Do you move further in/out?  Do you throw the ball faster/slower?

Obviously, what works for one person won't work for another but I'm curious to see what your strategies are to attack this condition.

Explain to us what type of lane condition you see carry down on and what surface.  This will help in how I attack it.

These were just general questions and as a lefty, I obviously don't see it that much.  In fact I've only seen it once this season (yes I know - sorry righties, it is what it is).  So with that said, a couple weeks ago, there were 3 lefties on my pair and there was  carrydown.  The other lefties went to weaker balls including one guy going to urethane and they both changes their lines.  Clearly the heads had broken down but I could not get my ball to finish strong and ended up leaving two 3-7-9 splits.  For the record, I was throwing a 607A.   I also have a Pure Physics and a Storm Natural in the arsenal.  I tried using both balls (different lines obviously) with no real success.  

I'm just curious to see what the different ways righties and other lefties deal with it.

Surface wood or synthetic?  How old is surface....worn or newer?  THS or other condition?  Big puddle in middle lots of friction to outside or?  Are other wrongsiders using urethane?

Newer synthetic, THS - medium oil.

I usually play down and in around the 6th to 8th board at 300 rpm, 17mph for what it's worth.  Pretty much the typical classic lefty stroker.

As for urethane, no lefties are using it consistently week to week. Only when the lanes breakdown.  Usually, I don't use my Natural at all for anything other than spares.

Righties on this type of condition where friction is present to the outside with carry down pushed down by poly or urethane go around the carry down and find friction to the outside of the carried down area.  You need the correct piece with correct ball layout to get the right angle for best carry.  On the right side the heads go faster and you need to move in to get ball down the lane and get the right angle around carry down to get best carry.  Generally high pin high Rg with some strength to get some pop off the end of the pattern.

Second that. If the current feeling with the ball is good, I'd move closer to the gutter and try to play around the hazardous area. This might need a change in release to add some length and maybe for recovery, but keeps error factors like a new ball PLUS a hazardous back end area few.

"Carrydown" is a misnomer. 90%+ of the time you're dealing with head oil depletion, not oil carrying down the lane past the end of the pattern.

When your league follows a mixed handicap or womens handicap league, there's plenty of TRUE carrydown. If you follow a men's league that uses 99% resin balls, THEN it may be a case of depeleted head and midlane oil IMITATING the ball reaction of carrydown.

I think in this case, you have to do what you might not ordinarily have to do or want to do, and that is, move deeper, to give your ball, the 607A, a chance to conserve energy, with head and midlane oil. If you still don't find enough oil, by moving deeper, MAYBE THEN, you can use a milder, strong backend ball, like the 505A (if you're a Track Fan-atic), as it needs less oil to get good length.

I'd agree with what Jeff is saying here.  On the left side moving deeper with a 607A should be easy to do to find oil.  It maybe out of your comfort zone but something that should be easily done with some practice.  In fact, if you could do this you wouldn't even think about using a ball like a Natural for the most part.

The issue also might be that you need to cut down on your axis rotation id it comes off the spot/friction to hard.  I have a lefty on my 5 man team who has this issue constantly but he can't get any forward roll and fights with too much axis rotation hence the ball feeds to hard off the spot and then keeps buying weak equipment and fights carry because of this.  If he'd use stronger covers/equipment his carry would go up but he can't tone down his release to get more under the ball and get more forward roll.  Doubt that's your issue but worth a comment anyway.  I'd guess it's more the reverse for you....you probably need to move in and use more axis rotation.

I have the same approach to carry down on every lane.  I start out with something stronger with a controlled backend, (siege) and when carry down does occur I go with a ball with less surface or polished with more backend. (920A)(pure swing, wild thing)

That way usually works great for my type of bowling.  It also keeps me is the same area through out the night.  I has working great on long tournaments also.  (where you bowl more than 3 games on the same pair).
