How do you get more revs?
« on: October 06, 2004, 11:13:36 AM »
I'm just wondering how you get more revs. My revrate is around 100 - 150... quite low.

Are you even throwing finger tip?

If yes, is the ball even fit for your hand?

100....I have never even heard of that low....I thought I used to be low at 225......

Make sure you have a proper fitting ball, pitches and everything.  I got correct pitches, and my revs now are 300+.

Also, you need to learn to cup your wrist.  Wrist curls would help build strength.

Yes, I do throw fingertip, and the ball feels like it fits my hand perfectly.  I'll try to cup my wrist next time.

Me wants those revs!

Hmm, you don't have a digital video camera, do you?  Maybe it's something in your style.  Try to get someone to help you and make sure you're doing it right (you don't wanna hurt yourself).

One thing to ad don't try to just muscle the heck out of it to get more revs use technique not muscle.

Wow, I'm gonna have problems remembering all this stuff.  Sometimes in my release, I feel that I drop it too early.  And I never thought that I'd have a smooth armswing. Hehe, thanks Thaxon and everyone else!

Yea you deffinitly have a smooth game, your gonna be good if you keep with it. I think the main thing is that you do release fairly early (from the look of the vids) but its not really a bad thing. What weight are you throwing? I know if you have a ball too heavy and, no offense, but if your kinda small its tough to get revs on a heavier ball. I dont get alot of revs either, but I have a bad habit of hitting up on the ball, so thats where the little I have come from. Truthfully man, I would work on keeping ur game so smooth, and not worry about the revs.

MUSCLING THE BALL WILL GIVE YOU A SIGNIFICANTLY LARGER RIGHT ARM........therefore....DON'T MUSCLE THE BALL  <---I occasionally muscle the ball and my right forearm is at least 1-2" larger than my left forearm, loL!

I agree that your game is very smooth, and because you are a little bit 'younger', I wouldn't worry about getting more revs immediately.  Consistent form is more important, and as you continue to grow, your revs will increase as well.   Keep up the great bowling!

You have to get your hand more underneath the ball at release.  With your hand on top of the ball, it's impossible for your fingers to impart strong forward roll.

At your age and size, ball weight is important.  What weight are you using?

Sorry all,

My Detour is 12 lbs.  For my other balls, Scout Reactive and Target Zone, they're both 11 lbs.  My coach said to switch ball weight because my Detour would have nothing inside it.

I have to throw my 2 cents in here....

I've been complaining for the last few years that I don't get enough on the ball. I was a KEGEL in January and I was at 275-300 rpm.  Since then I've been working to get my rev rate up. Even to the point of taking my finger pitches to 0 when I need a bunch of reverse.

Keep in mind that I am a regional pro, marginal one...but I do bowl on tough patterns alot.

I finally gave up on trying to get alot on the ball. I did get my rate up to about 300-320. So i said to myself....I need to get out clean and Pain free.

A fiend of mine has a jayhawk ball in his pro shop(Competitive Edge). I played with the ball for about 2 hours and with some recommendations from him. I ended up with 5/8 reverse on my fingers, a lil shorter overall span and 1/4 lateral left on my thumb with 1/16 reverse.

Keep in mind...It ALL relative to YOUR hand...And YOUR hand only.

Well...I threw it the other night expecting to get less rotation on the ball. To my suprise...I bet I'm around 350 now. EFFORTLESSLY...No Muscle and the ball is totally clean off my hand. Even Paul (My Friend in the pro shop) Was suprised. And My accuracy got better.

So...How to get more revs....My opinion...

Have you considered buying a wrist brace?  I personally use the Moro Pro Release.  It allows you to adjust to several different settings.  I can change the settings to allow me to crank up the revs to play a swing or to stay behind the ball with less revs to play the down and in.  Just a thought.  I have always been a believer of a brace helping those just learning or younger/not a physically strong to throw a hook more consistently.

I thought I'd add something here about using wrist supports and creating revs.  IMO revs are over rated.  Good technique with your release usually will create enough revs without going to the use of wrist supports, cupped hand positions, etc.  I am a firm believer in a neutral hand position.

I am not anti-wrist support....but if you are younger or a beginner it becomes a way you learned to bowl and then becomes a restrictive situation where you won't feel comfortable with it off.  For those that use wrist supports they know exactly what I am saying here.

With today's high tech powerful balls as many have said less is more.  Play the lane the way the lane condition dictates.  Use the correct ball and release required to get to the pocket and carry.  Many great bowlers kill the ball in the pocket not roll out but just before it does...this creates great carry/scoring.

You may have enough revs but not enough axis tilt another issue to think about.

NACdale points are very good.  Get fitted right and get good coaching.  Wrist supports are a last resort for those that are rev challenged.  Look else where first.
