How do you get out of a carry slump????
« on: March 02, 2004, 09:36:24 PM »
Let me start off by saying i am not whining or venting, this is a serious post where i am looking for honest help and hope.

I am stuck in something i can only decscribe as a carry slump, cannot get 10 off the deck on a consistent basis no matter what i do.  A combination of 3 different balls, less revs, more revs, less speed, more speed, every adjustment imaginable but i cannont get anything to work.  I continue to hit the pocket and bowl the best in my life but cannot strike.  I am doing some of the best spare shooting of my life which is barely keeping my 204 average.

I threw the front 11 in the pocket last night but on the 12th ball i was going for a 200, not a 300.  In that game I left a 7 pin, 8 pin, 9 pin, 2 10 pins, and an 8-10 split all flush.

How do i break out of this slump as i am getting quite frustrated.

Needing help...

I had the same game you just described with the back row giving me migranes about 6-7- weeks ago. My ave. had fallen from 20x to 193, this was about a 5 week slump. I found that I was tensing up through my release and more flinging the ball than rolling it. I carry well when I relax in my setup and keep a firm, but not totally rigid hand in the ball. By doing just the more relaxed release, I'm now back at 203, and also rolled my top set ever recently.

I don't know if you can get anything from that, but I hope you climb out of that carry slump soon.

Greatness--I second what Kendog said, when I start carrying poorly I am not rolling the ball.  You are more than likely grabbing the ball at the bottom of your release.  Here is what I recommend, when you step up on the approach:  get set with your feet, take a deep breath, and say "self shut up".  You have taught your muscles to do something now let them do it.  Don't think about not carrying b/c then you will try to help the ball on release causing poor roll and thus poor carry.  I am guilty of this on numerous occasions.

Keep us posted,

I have gone through something similar in the past and being an old baseball pitcher, I likened it to having a "dead arm".  When that happens in ball, you still have the same velocity but you lose the bite on your breaking pitches and movement on your fastball.  I used to feel that way if I was tired.

The cure for that as kendog points out is to loosen up.  Less is more in bowling, if you just push the ball away and let it drop with a nice lose swing the ball flies off your hand and the results will speak for themselves.

I had that problem the other night. I started out with my Piranha/C since the lanes were sloppy. First five frames were solid pocket shots and always left a 7 or 10. I put it way and pulled out my Turbo X, any pocket shot after that was a guaranteed strike. Finished the first game with a 220 and then went on to finish the night with a 237 and 241. Should have started with the Turbo X, I would have easily shot at least a 750 that night. I could throw it just about anywhere and it would destroy the pins. Funny how that works sometimes isn't it?

When I am having problems carrying, I find that tucking my pinky helps me get a little more revs, but I find that I stay behind the ball more and I actually roll it, like it was said above.  This helped me get a different entry angle into the pocket and the carry came.  Last night I had a very nice look, but if I changed my release slightly, I could count on something back row to stand.  First 2 games I go 212-192, and last game (of course I dont make the move earlier) I tucked my pinky, got a different look, and shot 266.

So grabbing the ball is when you keep your fingers in too long and rip the ball instead of letting it roll off your hand.  I know i do that but that has always been my game.  Maybe i am getting stronger and creating too much of an entry angle leaving all the mess.

Next time i bowl i will try to roll it off my hand and get a little more of a foward roll on the ball.

Thank you for all the help and i will update.
