Target the Breakpoint ?
« on: August 21, 2009, 02:29:05 AM »
How many of you target the breakpoint? Does it help to get the ball down the alley on the right line? I have always targeted at the arrows but am beginning to believe I should be looking further down the alley, perhaps clear to the breakpoint.

Any thoughts?

targeting at the breakpoint isn't recommended
to get your ball to a specific breakpoint most people would recommend that you draw an imaginary line between where you want your ball to cross at the foul line to your breakpoint and find a target that is on that line to throw to that should get your ball to that breakpoint

ive done that before ..not by choice.. I bowled on back to back days in 2 diff houses and during the winter will only take 2 balls with me (dont like tracking snow in).. well I forgot to switch equip and had too strong of equip for the house..

Had to move wayyyyy left and throw it as far & hard to get it to stay on the right side of the pins.  everyone gave me crap about turning the lanes into saw dust but it was what it was..

I would have to say i seen a lot of pocket 7 - 10's try to stay but messengered them all was wicked with the carry and pin action..

so i'd say only if need be it really takes it out of ya

What Mainzer said.  I start at the arrows and as conditions dry out I target further down lane.

I think everything has a pro and con to both. That's why I like to do both and target the arrows/boards to the break point using the arrows as only a guide.

I target across the arrows in a line across my breakpoint and then the 10 pin or somewhere up the alley if needed. Once I set the line I want to throw my focos is on a line from the arrows to the 10 pin or whatever my down lane target is.

I have tried most methods. I have the most success targeting a line from the dots just out from the foul line to the arrows. I draw the line, then set my gaze on the dot or board at the dots. I don't take my eyes off the dot until the ball hits it, then I follow the ball to see if I hit my mark at the arrows. If I hit these two points, I usually nail the pocket.

pooh, I've tried that and as you've said every method possible. That method works well on certain houses but I was doing it to an area on the lane, not the dots to the arrows. When I tried it that way I was getting inconsistent speed.
The other problems I found with the dots past the foul line is the dots are not coordinated in any logic of certain boards that make sense unlike arrows which is every 5 boards. Then comes the problem on medium conditions where you are forced to play inside and are past the last dot ( which I think is the 13 board, can't remember) and then you have to point to the certain board in between the dots. Once you get deep enough and the lanes are either dry or a shot requires to play deep and tight, then you can play the left side of the dots but when it comes to adjusting in transition I found myself running out of the lane and instead of laying it over the dots I had to loft it or totally change the release.

Then the main problem arose at houses that have lanes that are dimly lit or even worse, a wood lane house. On a couple of wood lane houses including one I tried a sweeper at long ago trying the dots I couldn't really see them on the lane until my release.

I usually try to target about half way down the lane and adjust from there.  If I need more length or there is some OB to the right, I will move my eyes farther down.  (Love Brunswick Pro Anvil lane and the far range finders!)  If the lanes are tight or I need to get the ball going right off my hand, I will move my target back closer to the arrows.

Usually end up targeting at or close to the break point on flat, PBA, sport type patterns.
