How do you play deep inside?
« on: May 09, 2005, 07:40:13 AM »
I've been playing about 3 years now, and carry a 165 average, but improving all the time as I play often and take lessons.  How do you play a deep inside line?  I play the track area and an outside line almost all the time, but in some conditions I can't get a consistent pocket delivery there.  I've seen the better bowlers play between 17-20 out to 5-10 and back in, but I have not been able to do that.  Is this based more on equipment, or is it something you can only learn to do as you get better?  The ball I use is the Ebonite Vortex and the Hammer Sling Blade.  Any tips would be appreciated, as I would like the ability to play that deep inside line.  The only thing I can do with a  line like that is take a tight shot right at the pocket.  Thanks!  Oh, and I'm buying a new ball at the end of the week, so if you have any ideas to improve my arsenal, let em fly!!

as far as the inside lines go, i personally think it's more about equipment than anything. not a whole lot you can do, except for maybe small hand adjustments and slowling down your ball speed. as far as the new ball goes, i'd suggest something like the oracle vision from roto grip. or maybe the energy by dyno thane. that of course, depends on the type of condition you're looking to improve on.

I want a ball that can handle the heavier oil, but I'd also like it to work at least a little in medium conditions.

ebonite big time is a good choice. It wont break the bank, and it will handle med-heavy with a snap and allow you to play a deep like due to its flip block.

NO TO VERTIGO. Storm might say that the ball is for heavier oil, well that may be true, but that ball has almost no midlane read just like every other storm ball. It will wait till backend to hook, but you need a midlane read that the Big Time would give you. Im not trying to say storm is bad, i just think that they have their own nitch and heavy oil balls is not theirs.

the main thing to remember about playing inside is to be square to your target---not square to the foul line. if you are playing a down and in shot around the 7th board your stance will be square to your target----the foul line. when you move inside you will need to open your stance---your shoulders, hips, and feet will all need to be directed towards your target. you will also need some side roll on the ball to get it to push to the right and then be able to recover.

Bowling is really about how your game matches up with the ball you are using and the condition of the lane.  Your ball and lane will talk it over (after you roll one) and let you know (observe what happens after you deliver the ball) where you should play.  Trying to dictate a certain line is an exercise in futility.

It's not that I want to try and dictate my shot to the lane, it's that I want the most possible shots to choose from in differing conditions.  As it is now, I struggle with certain conditions because I can only really play outside.  I want to learn/have as many different lines at my disposal as possible.

I will be getting a more aggressive ball this weekend, which should help, and I will also try that shot by being square to it.  I can bring it up with my coach next lesson as well.

man it isnt the ball necessarily ... it is the bowler. if you throw the ball with a lot of revs and depending on the speed it will hook. depends on you really ... many can make a white dot hook in the middle. i am one of them so i would consider playing your own game and not worrying about what others are doing. just adjust your line.

Splendorlex, go with the Track GP2. I have had one for around 3 months now and it will work on oil from medium oil and up. Due to my low revs and not a lot of hand, I previously was never able to play inside until I got this ball. Now I can play inside when conditions call for an inside shot and I clan play straight up the boards when conditions call for thay type shot. Go to the Track Forum and talk to tenpinspro, EXCALIBER and Clint Daley. Or better yet, message them.
